Big Second Half Lifts Dutchmen Over Alvernia, 31-10

Lebanon, Pa. (Oct. 16, 2021) - Lebanon Valley College (3-3, 2-2) scored 21 second half points en route to a 31-10 win over Alvernia University (0-7, 0-5) in MAC football action on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Lebanon Valley College.

Alvernia trailed just 10-0 at half, but Lebanon Valley came out of the break strong and put 21 up on the board for the 31-10 win.

With Lebanon Valley winning the toss and electing to defer, the Golden Wolves got the ball first. Malcolm Carey took the first play of the game for a six yard rush, but a rush for a loss and an incompletion on the next two plays forced Alvernia to punt the ball away.

After a just under three minute drive for 26 yards, Lebanon Valley punted the ball back to the Golden Wolves.

Alvernia took over at its own 20 yard line, and a 14-yard pass from Kevin Washington to Neeko Scurlock sparked a drive that took the Golden Wolves down to Lebanon Valley's 30-yard line. Facing a 3rd and 10, Washington attempted a pass, but it was intercepted by Lebanon Valley's Erik Williams to halt Alvernia's push down the field.

Lebanon Valley took over with 6:01 left in the first quarter. Alvernia forced an incompletion on 3rd and 7 that appeared to end Lebanon Valley's drive, but a roughing the passer call against the Golden Wolves gave the Dutchmen a fresh set of downs. The Dutchmen went on to work their way down to the 11-yard line, where Jamel Fleming forced an incompletion for the Dutchmen to bring Lebanon Valley's field goal unit out onto the field. The attempt was good as Lebanon Valley took over six minutes off the clock and went up 3-0 with 14:50 left in the second quarter.

The Golden Wolves went 3-and-out on their next drive to give Lebanon Valley the ball back with 13:06 left in the first half.

Lebanon Valley put together a 12-play, 68-yard drive that took nearly seven points off the board and ended with an 11-yard rush for a touchdown by LVC's Braden Bohannon. After the converted extra point attempt, Lebanon Valley held the 10-0 advantage.

Alvernia got the ball back on its own 21-yard line with 6:07 left in the half. The Golden Wolves strung together a solid drive. After moving down to LVC's 48-yard line, Washington completed a 20-yard pass to Jacob Montalto to move Alvernia down to LVC's 28-yard line. Sitting with a 3rd and 12 two plays later, Malcolm Carey broke off for a 29-yard rush. But, the play was called back for an illegal use of the hands penalty on Alvernia. The penalty put Alvernia in a 3rd and 25 situation, which Alvernia was unable to convert. The Golden Wolves punted the ball away with 17 seconds left in the half.

Lebanon Valley got off one play before the half and took a 10-0 lead into the break.

Alvernia attempted an onside kick coming out of the half, but an illegal touching on the Golden Wolves gave Lebanon Valley the ball with great field position on Alvernia's 38. Lebanon Valley took its first play for a 3-yard rush, but broke off on the next play for a 35 yard touchdown run to go up 17-0.

Both teams traded 3-and-outs on the next two drives and Alvernia got the ball back with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third. Alvernia worked its way down the field and a 12-yard completion Cameron Fetrow on third and long put Alvernia in field goal position. First year Henry Garton came out to attempt the 37-yarder and put it through the uprights for his first career points and to put Alvernia on the board.

The Golden Wolves defense stepped up on the next drive and forced a 3-and-out that took less than a minute off the clock. Lebanon Valley punted it back to Alvernia's 26-yard line.

Alvernia was forced to punt away on its next drive. But, Ryan's Long punt was blocked, recovered by LVC, and then fumbled away and recovered by Alvernia on Lebanon's 37-yard line to give Alvernia great field position.

The Golden Wolves used the fresh momentum and great field position, and began working their way down the field. Facing a 4th and 5 on the LVC 16, Alvernia converted the 4th down with an 11-yard completion to Neeko Scurlock. After two attempts to get into the endzone came up short, Carey punched it in on a 1-yard run to make it a one score game, 17-10.

Alvernia's defense forced another 3-and-out to give the Golden Wolves the ball back on their 27-yard line with just over 11 minutes left to play.

Just two plays into the new drive, Lebanon Valley picked off Washington and took all momentum away from the Golden Wolves.

Working on a short field, Lebanon Valley ran the ball six times and reached the end zone on a five yard rush by Tim Ervey to make it a two possession game, 24-10.

Alvernia had to punt its next drive away, giving Lebanon Valley the ball back with 4:37 left in the game.

Lebanon Valley continued to run the ball and take time off the clock. Facing a 2nd and 14 with under a minute to play, Lebanon Valley put the game out of reach with a 49 yard rushing touchdown to go up 31-10.

The Golden Wolves got the ball back with 36 seconds left. Time would expire on the Golden Wolves three plays later as Lebanon Valley came away with the 31-10 win.

Washington went 17-for-28 for 131 yards. Carey led Alvernia rushers with 37 yards on 18 attempts. Scurlock led the receiving corps with seven receptions for 56 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Tajon Whiten led Alvernia with 13 tackles. Fleming finished with nine tackles and one pass breakup.

Alvernia has a bye next, but will return to the field on October 30th with a home game against Stevenon University.
