Jersey City, NJ (Oct. 16, 2021) - Alvernia University (6-12) fell to New Jersey City University (13-6) 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's volleyball action at NJCU.

The Gothic Knights swept the match with 25-19, 27-25, and 25-22 set wins.

In the opening match of the contest, NJCU jumped out to a 7-1 lead early and progressed to a 19-10 advantage later in the set. A set error by NJCU sparked a 6-1 run to bring the set to 20-16. Alvernia held off the 24-18 set point by forcing an attack error to make it 24-19, but the Gothic Knights sealed the set on a service error by the Golden Wolves.

Alvernia did not allow NJCU to jump out to an early lead in the second set. A kill by Olivia Frutiger gave Alvernia the 5-3 advantage early on. The Golden Wolves and Gothic Knights traded points before they faced a locked up set at 15-15. Alvernia briefly held a 16-15 advantage on a kill by Rachel Sipling, but NJCU answered with a quick 4-0 run to go up 19-16. Alvernia responded though, going on a 5-0 run that included two aces by Sipling to retake the lead 21-19. Alvernia then had set point with a 24-22 advantage but NJCU stayed in the fight, holding off set point three times before taking a 25-24 advantage of its own. Alvernia tied it back up at 25-25 on a kill by Alexis Schwenk, but NJCU took the final two points to take the set 27-25.

The Golden Wolves came out strong in the third set, jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. The Gothic Knights chipped away and got it down to a 12-8 advantage in favor of the Golden Wolves. NJCU then went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-12 lead over Alvernia. Later in the set, Alvernia tied it up at 22-22 on an ace by Schwenk. But, NJCU rattled off three straight points to seal the set 25-22, and the match 3-0.

Sipling led Alvernia with 13 kills on 19 attacks. She also finished with a team high 10 digs. Gaffney finished with 17 set assists for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves resume their MAC Commonwealth schedule on Wednesday hosting Albright College.
