Alvernia Blanks Albright, Clinches Playoff Berth

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 23, 2021) - With a 3-0 win over Albright College (5-9, 3-5), Alvernia University (7-9. 4-3) punched its ticket into the MAC Commonwealth Field Hockey postseason on Saturday night with the crucial win over its MAC Commonwealth foe at Alvernia.

Alvernia started the night by honoring its three seniors: Marie Panietteri, Madison Potthoff, and Victoria Strasser.

The Golden Wolves wasted no time lighting up the board, with Gianna DeGregory deflecting in a shot by Madison Potthoff to put Alvernia up 1-0 before a minute had even ticked off the clock.

In the 17th minute the Golden Wolves were awarded a penalty stroke, and Potthoff stepped up to the line. Potthoff sent her shot high, just above the goalie and just under the crossbar, to convert the stroke and put Alvernia up 2-0.

Albright had the opportunity to play man-up for the final five minutes of the second quarter, but were unable to get a shot off as Alvernia took the 2-0 lead into the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Alvernia extended its lead to 3-0 when Felicia Getz crossed a pass over to Makenzie Smeigh off the right post. Smeigh squeezed the shot into net between the goalie and the right post to put Alvernia up 3-0.

Albright did not get a shot off the rest of the way as Alvernia came away with the 3-0 win and secured a spot in the 2021 MAC Commonwealth Championship.

Lexi Boettcher played all 60 minutes for Alvernia, making one save.

While Alvernia clinched the playoff berth, its seed is still up for grabs. With one conference game left to play, Alvernia sits in fifth place in MAC Commonwealth standings. A win over Lebanon Valley on Wednesday as well as a loss by Widener could push Alvernia up to the #3 seed.

Alvernia will head to Lebanon Valley for a 7:00 PM matchup with the Dutchmen on Wednesday.
