Women’s Volleyball Splits Tri-Match On Senior Day

Golden Wolves Honor Six Seniors On Saturday

Reading Pa. (Oct. 23, 2021)- Alvernia University Women's Volleyball (9-13) split its home finale tri-match on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Rutgers-Camden (17-8) and a 3-0 win over Brooklyn College (12-11) on Saturday in a series of non-conference matchups at Alvernia.
 
The Golden Wolves started the day by honoring six seniors: Liz Gillespie, Alexis Schwenk, Taylor Suto, Molly Gaffney, Alex Chierichella, and Chrissy Equaoje.
 
Alvernia opened its day with a match against Rutgers. The Scarlet Raptors started the first set strong, opening the contest with a 9-4 run. The Golden Wolves bounced back as Gaffney helped guide a 4-1 run. Despite Alvernia's efforts, Rutgers-Camden took the first set, 25-15.
 
In the second set, the Scarlet Raptors jumped out to a 5-1 lead. As the set progressed, the Golden Wolves went on a 6-2 run, which cut the deficit to just three, 15-12. The Scarlet Raptors quickly responded as they went on a 5-0 run. Despite a 4-0 response by Alvernia, Rutgers-Camden claimed the second set, 25-20.
 
In the third set, the Golden Wolves came out strong, as they quickly jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The Scarlet Raptors bounced back, however, outscoring Alvernia 24-10 the rest of the way to win the third set 25-14, and take the match 3-0.
 
Allie Evangelista led the Golden Wolves with five kills and two total blocks against Rutgers-Camden. Schwenk dished out ten assists, while Gaffney handed out seven of her own.
 
In Alvernia's second matchup of the day, Brooklyn College started fast, taking a 12-4 lead. The Golden Wolves showed their resiliency as Frutiger sparked a 14-4 run.
 
Alvernia kept its foot on the pedal, with Frutiger and Rachel Sipling leading the charge. The Golden Wolves closed out the set, taking the win, 25-23.
 
Alvernia continued with the momentum, opening the second set on an 11-3 run which was led by Sipling and Suto. Suto continued to push the Bulldogs as she racked up three service aces.
 
This helped provide the spark for an 8-0 Golden Wolves run. Alvernia won the second set 25-12, with first-yearJamie Pierce picking up the final kill.
 
The third and final set saw Alvernia starting on a 10-5 run, with Sipling and Gillespie leading the charge. Gillespie and Frutiger continued to press the advantage, helping push the Bulldogs.
 
The Golden Wolves closed out the final set 25-19, winning the contest, 3-0.
 
Alvernia was led by Sipling who tallied 11 kills and four digs in the win. Pierce recorded a career-high five kills while also tallying two total blocks. Schwenk dished out a team-high nine assists while Deanna Klunk tallied eight.
 
The Golden Wolves return to action Tuesday at Lebanon Valley College.
