Reading, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2021)- After falling behind 2-0, Alvernia Women's Volleyball (7-9) secured the comeback victory late Tuesday night as they defeated Lancaster Bible (7-9) 3-2 in a non-conference women's volleyball matchup at Alvernia.
The Chargers started strong as they jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. The Golden Wolves quickly rebounded as they went on an early 6-1 run in the first set. Both teams pushed back, as Alvernia claimed a slim lead late in the first, 20-17. Despite the offensive push, the Chargers went on a run and claimed the set, 25-23.
Lancaster Bible started the second set on a 7-2 run.
Taylor Suto helped produce a much-needed spark recording two kills as Alvernia went on a run of its own. The Chargers continued to rack up kills as they pushed Alvernia to its limits. The Golden Wolves eventually dropped the second set, 25-20.
The third set showed Alvernia's resilience as
Olivia Frutiger and
Rachel Sipling both tallied early kills. The Golden Wolves jumped out to an 11-4 lead as Sipling continued to guide the way. The Chargers fought back though as an 11-4 run brought the score even, 15-15.
Frutiger and Sipling both claimed two kills late in the third set, which sparked a big run for the Golden Wolves. Alvernia finished the set on a 3-0 run to claim the third set, 25-22.
The fourth set saw Alvernia take a quick lead as it took a 7-3 run lead. This time it was Frutiger's turn to guide the Golden Wolves as she tallied two kills partway through the set.
Suto and Sipling also applied pressure which helped give Alvernia an eight-point lead, 19-11. Despite the Charger's late push, the Golden Wolves claimed the fourth set, 25-22.
The Golden Wolves continued to carry the momentum as a kill by Suto gave them a 5-1 lead early in the fifth. Back-to-back kills by Frutiger and
Allie Evangelista helped extend the lead to seven. Alvernia closed out the set as its last three points came off Charger's errors. The Golden Wolves claimed the set, 15-11.
Sipling tallied 14 kills, 14 digs, and four service aces. Frutiger recorded 11 kills, 16 digs, and two service aces. Suto racked up ten kills and 19 digs.
Alvernia returns to action this Thursday at Washington College.
