Second Half Goal Lifts Eagles Over Golden Wolves, 1-0

St. David's, Pa. (Oct. 6, 2021) - A goal in the 59th minute was all Eastern University (6-4-1, 1-1) needed as the Eagles took a 1-0 win over Alvernia University (3-7, 0-2) on Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth women's soccer action at Eastern.

The match started with the Eagles pushing the pace. Eastern recorded three shots and two corner kicks in the first 11 minutes of the contest. Despite the early push, Alvernia held strong as Brynn Bock tallied two quick saves.

Alvernia's first shot came off the right foot of Kyla Gibson, but it was unable to sneak past the keeper. Just minutes later another opportunity arose for the Golden Wolves, with Jenna Wentling sending a shot wide right.

The Eagles tallied nine total shots in the first half, five of which were on goal. But, Alvernia's defense, behind five first half saves by Bock, kept the Eagles off the board.

Eastern continued to stay in control to open the second half as the Eagles fired off three shots in the first five minutes. Despite the barrage of shots, the first goal did not come until the 59th minute of the match. Lauryn Laning was able to sneak a shot past Lily Sankey to give the Eagles the lead, 1-0.

Alvernia had two opportunities later in the second half. The first was recorded by Jocelyn Keller, who sent the ball to the bottom of the net but was saved by the keeper.

The second came off the foot of Gibson in the 89th minute. This shot went just wide of the net and was nearly the equalizer. Eastern was able to hold onto its slim lead and defeat the Golden Wolves, 1-0.

Alvernia faced 17 shots in the contest, with Bock making five saves and Sankey recording four.

The Golden Wolves return to action this Friday, hosting York College to kick off Alvernia's Homecoming and Family Weekend.
