Springfield, Mass. (Nov. 13, 2021)- #4 Muhlenberg College (8-7-2) scored three second-half goals to pull off the upset over #1 Alvernia University (14-6) in the first round of the Men's Soccer ECAC championship on Saturday afternoon at host Springfield College.
The game started neck and neck, with neither defense allowing a lot of pressure. The first shot came at the 5:40 mark, with
Braden Kreider firing away the match's first shot, which sailed far left of the net.
The Muhl's offense picked up the pace from here, as they recorded five shots, all of which sailed wide of the net.
Muhlenberg continued to test the Golden Wolves' defense as the half progressed. Despite this strong push, Alvernia was able to negate every attack.
Ryan Cogill had a scoring opportunity midway through the first half, but the shot sailed wide.
The Golden Wolves tallied just one more shot in the first half, which came off the foot of
Gabe Wunderlich and was saved by the keeper. The half ended with the score knotted firmly, 0-0.
The second half saw Muhlenberg break the tie with a goal in the first three minutes of the contest which came off the foot of Chris Richards.
It did not take long for Alvernia to answer, as just 22 seconds later
Evan Bauer netted the Golden Wolves' first goal of the contest, with Cogill picking up an assist.
Alvernia continued to push Muhlenberg, with
Ryan Kuster firing off a shot that sailed just high of the net.
The Muhls once again broke the game's tie, as Taylan Akdag slipped a shot past
Nate Nimo to give them a 2-1 lead.
Once again Alvernia did not need to wait long for a response, as Kreider netted the equalizer off an assist from Cogill.
Despite this strong effort, the Muhlenberg offense would prove too much for Alvernia. The Muhls once again broke the game's tie, with a third goal that came in the 79
th minute.
The Golden Wolves' offense tried to even things up once again, with Kreider almost netting a shot in the 88
th minute. The Mules' defense proved too strong though, as they downed Alvernia, 3-2.
Nimo faced recorded three saves on the day while facing 22 shots.
This wraps Alvernia's season with the Golden Wolves finishing the season 14-6.
