Kramer's Historic Performance Leads Alvernia Past Arcadia, 64-53

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 30, 2021) - Women's Basketball junior Cathryn Kramer had a career afternoon to lead Alvernia University (6-5) to a 64-53 win over Arcadia University (3-8) on Thursday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at Alverina's Jack McCloskey Court.

Kramer became just the second player in Alvernia women's basketball history to record a triple-double with her historic afternoon. Kramer recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds, but her most impressive stat of the night came off her blocking efforts. Kramer recorded a single-game record 13 blocks on the night, nearly doubling up the previous record of seven blocks held by both Kramer (12/7/2019 vs. Widener) and Karen Kupusnick (2/5/1992 vs. Misericordia). Kramer joins Alvernia Hall of Famer Dawn Ermert as the only two Alvernia Women's Basketball players to record triple-doubles. Ermert recorded the first Alvernia triple-double during the 1993-94 season.

"Cat continues to expand her game and get better every day," said Head Coach Rayne Reber of Kramer's performance. "She is a leader and is dedicated to this program and her teammates. She is the type of player that is willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win."

Kramer's 13 blocks, along with three blocks by Tyra Robinson and one block by Jordan Karmonick, set a new single-game team block record for the Golden Wolves. Alvernia's 17 blocks on the afternoon bettered the previous record of 14 blocks set by the 2009-10 squad over Moravian on January 26, 2010.

After the Knights held an early 2-0 lead, the Golden Wolves went up 3-2 following a layup by Kramer with 7:51 to play in the opening quarter. A jumper by Tamia Wessels and a 3-pointer by Karmonick over the next 90 seconds built Alvernia's lead up to six, 8-2.

Another layup by Kramer extended Alvernia's lead to eight, 12-4, with just under five minutes left in the first quarter. But, the Knights quickly closed the gap with a 6-0 run over a three minute span to make it a 12-10 game in favor of Alvernia with 1:58 to play in the first.

The Knights took a one point lead, 15-14, with 18 seconds left in the 1st quarter. Arcadia nearly took the lead into the second quarter, but a jumper by Tyra Robinson as time was expiring gave Alvernia the 16-15 advantage going into the second quarter.

After a scoreless two minutes to open the second quarter, the Knights were the first to break the scoreless drought and used a layup to retake the lead, 17-16, with 7:53 to play in the half.

A layup by Kramer on Alvernia's next possession sparked a quick 6-2 run by the Golden Wolves that gave them a 24-19 advantage with just under five minutes to play in the first half.

The Knights quickly rebounded and closed out the second half with the hot hand. Arcadia outscored Alvernia 12-1 over the next four minutes as the Knights held a 31-25 lead with one minute remaining in the first half.

The Golden Wolves scored the final points of the half - a jumper by Jannelle Robinson - to make it a 31-27 game in favor of Arcadia going into the break.

Arcadia built its lead up to 33-27 to open the second half, but Alvernia settled in with a fastbreak layup by Tamia Wessels with 8:24 left in the third to bring Alvernia within four, 33-29.

Layups by Taliyah Malone and Kramer on Alvernia's next two possessions tied the game up at 33-33 with 7:18 to play in the third.

Arcadia retook the lead, 35-33, following two made free throws with 6:20 left in the third.

The Golden Wolves again fought back, with Kramer collecting an offensive board and putting it back up for a layup to tie the game back up at 35-35.

A jumper by Tyra Robinson with 4:24 left in the third gave Alvernia the lead for good, 39-37.

Alvernia held Arcadia to just one point the rest of the quarter while building its lead up to 51-38. Seven of Alvernia's points during its run came off the hand of Tyra Robinson. Another four came from Chenoa Bernhardt during Alvernia's run. The Golden Wolves would take the 51-38 lead into the final frame.

Tyra Robinson scored Alvernia's first points of the fourth quarter to push Alvernia's lead to its largest of the afternoon, 53-38.

Arcadia worked its way back into single digits for a large part of the fourth quarter, but the Knights never got closer than six points.

The Golden Wolves found success at the line in the final minutes to maintain their lead and to ultimately take the 64-53 win.

In addition to Kramer's triple-double, Tyra Robinson finished the afternoon with a team-high 15 points. Karmonick finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, and a team-high six assists.

Triple-doubles are a rare occurrence in basketball, and even more rarely happen with blocks included in the stat line. While there is no database for Division III women's basketball triple-doubles, there have been 529 recorded at the Division I level between 1985-2019. Of those 529, only six included players recording 13 or more blocks.

"Cat's performance tonight was truly special," added Reber. "She was a force on the boards, and a monster on the defensive end. Her intentinsity around the rim, along with her ability to finish around the basket, is what truly helped us get the victory today."

Alvernia returns to action and resumes its MAC Commonwealth schedule on January 5th at Eastern University.
