Reading, Pa. (Feb. 27, 2021) - Alvernia University (2-1, 2-1) split a doubleheader series with Misericordia University (1-2, 1-2) on Saturday in MAC Men's Volleyball action at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.
Alvernia took the first match of the day in straight sets, but fell to the Cougars 3-1 in the second match of the afternoon.
In the first set of the day, Alvernia and Misericordia were tied at 16-16 before Alvernia pulled ahead 17-16 on a kill by
Logan McGinley. The Golden Wolves extended their lead to 19-16 following an ace by Victor De Avila and a set error by the Cougars. Alvernia then scored the final five points of the match behind the service of McGinley to take set one 25-18.
Alvernia had to battle from behind in the second set after the Cougars jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. Alvernia chipped away at the lead and tied it up at 7-7 on a kill by
Tyler Anderson. The two teams traded the lead until Alvernia scored four straight to go up 12-9. The Golden Wolves would lead the set the rest of the way and sealed the 25-18 set win on a kill by Anderson.Â
Much like the first set, Alvernia and Misericordia were locked in a 17-17 tie late in the third set. Alvernia scored back-to-back points to go up 19-17, and then went on a 6-3 run to seal the 25-21 set win and 3-0 match win.
In match one of the day, Anderson led Alvernia with 15 kills and
Ethyn Burczyk finished with 17 assists. Â
In match two of the day, Misericordia got out to a fast start in the first set to lead 14-8 mid-way through. The Cougars built their lead up to 18-10, but Alvernia got back within two points at 19-17. The Cougars would go on to score six of the last seven points of the match to take the 25-18 first set win.
The Cougars would go on to take set two 25-20, but Alvernia battled back in set three.
After trailing 13-8 early in the third set, Alvernia went on an 8-0 run to jump ahead at 16-13. Misericordia got back within one, 22-21, on a service error but Alvernia closed out the set scoring the final three points for the 25-21 set win to force a fourth set.Â
Misericordia would end up leading wire-to-wire in the fourth set. The Golden Wolves got within one point late, 24-23, but Misericordia took the match point on an Alvernia service error to take the 25-23 set win and the 3-1 match win.
Tyler Anderson again led Alvernia with 22 kills, and
Ethyn Burczyk finished with 28 assists. Brain Rea finished with six blocks.
The Golden Wolves return to action on Wednesday when they host Wilkes to finish out the season series. Alvernia took match one of the series in straight sets earlier this week.
