Alvernia Falls To Albright, 68-57

Reading, Pa. (March 11, 2021) - Albright College (6-3, 4-3) held off a second half push by Alvernia University (3-3, 2-3) to come away with the 68-57 win over the Golden Wolves on Thursday night in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action at Albright.

The Golden Wolves struggled to get things going in the first quarter, with Albright jumping out to an early 6-0 lead three minutes into the game.

Just under four minutes into the game, Alvernia's Cathryn Kramer put the Golden Wolves on the board with a layup. But, Alvernia struggled to slow Albright in the first quarter as the Lions extended their lead to 10, 12-2, three minutes later and 18-6 going into the second quarter.

Alvernia opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer from Tamia Wessles followed by two made free throws from Kramer to cut Albright's lead down to 18-11 with 8:15 to play in the half.

Back-to-back layups followed by a foul shot from Jordan Karmonick five minutes later put Alvernia within one, 24-23 with 2:30 to play in the half.

Albright responded though with an 11-0 run to extend its lead back up to 11, 33-24, with 35 seconds left in the half. Alvernia's Madison Miskar made a layup as time expired in the first half with Alvernia trailing 34-25.

Alvernia opened the second half with a jumper from Kramer, but Albright answered with a layup on the next possession.

The Golden Wolves then strung together back-to-back threes by Karmonick and Kayla Williams to cut Albright's lead down to one possession, 36-33, with 7:45 left in the quarter. After Albright converted three free throws over the next minute, Karmonick knocked down another three to bring Alvernia back within three again, 39-36.

Albright again pulled away on a 9-0 run to extend its lead back to double digits, 48-36, with 3:11 left in the third.

Alvernia chipped away in the final minute of the quarter and a buzzer beater three from Tamia Wessels cut Albright's lead back down to three, 52-49 heading into the fourth.

After a jumper by Albright to open the final quarter, Williams knocked down a three to make it a two point game at 54-52 with 8:28 to play. But, both offenses went cold as neither team scored a point for over three minutes.

Albright was the first to break the ice with a layup by Brady Wassel with 5:03 to play, but Alvernia responded with a three from Taliyah Malone to make it a one point game, 56-55, with 4:49 to go.

Albright came back with a three pointer of its own to go back up by four, and the Lion's defense locked Alvernia down the rest of the way. The Golden Wolves would only score two points over the final four minutes as Albright took the 68-57 win.

Karmonick led the Golden Wolves with 20 points and four assists. Williams finished with 11 points and Julia Ewen led Alvernia with 15 boards.

Alvernia closes out its regular season on Friday at home against Albright. Alvernia's seeding will be determined at the end of the night, and the Golden Wolves will face their seed equivalent of the MAC Freedom next week in a crossover matchup.
