Owings Mills, Md. (March 20, 2021) - Alvernia University Men's Volleyball (5-5, 5-5) fell to #14 Stevenson University (9-1, 9-1) in a doubleheader sweep by the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon in MAC Men's Volleyball action at Stevenson.

The Mustangs took set one in straight sets, 3-0, and took set two 3-1.

In the first set of match one, Alvernia and Stevenson were locked in a close battle, with Stevenson leading Alvernia 17-16. But the Mustangs rattled off eight of the final nine points of the set to take the 25-17 first set win over Alvernia. 

In set two, the Mustangs led 7-1 early and pushed its lead to 19-9 later in the set. Alvernia got within seven, 21-14, but the Mustangs closed out the set with a 4-1 run for the 25-15 win.

The Mustangs then closed out the match with a decisive 25-17 third set win over the Golden Wolves. 

Logan McGinley and Victor de Avila both finished with even attack percentages for Alvernia, with McGinley finishing with five kills and de Avila with three.

In match two of the afternoon, Alvernia led the first set 7-6, but Stevenson strung together a run of five straight to jump to an 11-7 lead. The Golden Wolves trailed by two late, 21-19, but Stevenson scored the final four points of the set for the 25-19 first set win.

Alvernia again had it close early in set two, 7-6, but another Stevenson run, this time 9-2, again propelled the Mustangs to a 16-8 lead. The Mustangs would close out the set 25-18 to take the 2-0 match lead.

Alvernia bounced back with a third set win in an extended set. The Golden Wolves had an opportunity at set point with a 24-22 late lead, but Stevenson scored two straight to tie it at 24-24. But Alvernia's Caleb Whitehead was able to prevent the straight set sweep by converting two kills for Alvernia to close out the third set with a 26-24 win for Alvernia.

In the forced fourth set, Alvernia again held set point at 24-21 and were looking to force a fifth set. But, Stevenson converted three straight kills to tie it at 24-24 and force another extended set. Alvernia held a one point lead three times, but each time the Mustangs were able to answer. With Alvernia leading 27-26, the Mustangs took advantage of an attack error by Alvernia to tie it at 27-27. The Mustangs would then score on two straight kills to take the 29-17 set win and 3-1 match win.

Josh Stewart and Caleb Whitehead led Alvernia with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Ethyn Burczyk finished with 24 digs and Mike Monczewski had six blocks for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves return to the court on Wednesday with a road match at Messiah University.
