Frederick, Md. (March 7, 2021) - Alvernia University (3-1) swept the Sunday doubleheader at Hood College (1-3) in non-conference baseball action with 3-1 and 4-3 wins.
Alvernia took the seven inning game 3-1, and took the shortened second game 5-3. Game two ended in the bottom of the fifth after running out of daylight.
The Golden Wolves struck first in the in game with in the top of the second.
Brandon Smith drove in Thomas Faggiano on a double down the left field line to put Alvernia up 1-0.
Hood responded in the bottom of the second with the bases loaded fielder's choice to tie it up at 1-1.
Alvernia retook the lead in the top of the third with
Nick Nutile driving in
Mike Cirilli on a single to right field to give Alvernia the 2-1 advantage.
The Golden Wolves added an insurance run in the top of the sixth with Faggiano scoring on a passed ball to put Alvernia up 3-1.
The Blazers had the tying run at the plate in both the bottom of the sixth and the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to convert.
Nutile and Smith led Alvernia's offense with a hit and an RBI each.
Christian Burrus picked up the win on the mound with a three strikeout and four hit performance over five innings. Cirilli earned the save, giving up one hit in one inning of work.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Blazers struck first after Hood's Chris Nally hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the third, and was driven in on the following at bat to give Hood the 1-0.
The Golden Wolves retook the lead after scoring four in the top of the fifth. Faggiono scored the tying run on a bases loaded wild pitch. Cirilli then drove in two on a single to left center to put Alvernia up 3-1. Nutile drove in the final run of the inning on a single up the middle to bring in Cirilli to give the Golden Wolves the 4-1 lead.
Hood responded in its half of the fifth, scoring two runs to cut Alvernia's lead down to 4-3.
The game would then be called for darkness, with Alvernia getting the 4-3 win.
Billy Dougar and
Billy Coleman each finished the game with two hits. Cirilli led with two RBIs on one hit, and Nutile finished with a hit and an RBI.
Michael Tancredi went three innings, giving up two hits and striking out two. Cole Sinnot earned the win in relief, striking out one and allowing one hit.
Alvernia returns to action on Saturday when the Golden Wolves will host Hood at Angelica Park for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader.
