Reading, Pa. (April 24, 2021) - Alvernia Baseball (17-10-1, 12-7-1) put up big numbers for the second day in a row to complete the series sweep over Albright College (2-14, 2-16) with two wins over the Lions on Saturday in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Albright
Alvernia took game one 22-13 and followed that with a 15-4 win in game two.
The Lions opened the scoring in game one with a two-run bottom of the second.
Alvernia responded with a three run top of the third. Billy Coleman went deep for a solo home run, and Kyler Newton doubled to left field to drive in two and put Alvernia up 3-2.
Albright regained the lead in its half of the third, scoring six runs on three hits to go up 8-3.
Alvernia came up big in the top of the 5th, scoring ten runs on nine hits to go up 13-8 on the Lions. Newton drove in the first two runs of the inning on a homer to left field, and Coleman tripled to right later in the inning to drive in two more. Mike Cirilli then came up with the bases loaded and launched a grand slam over the left field wall to put Alvernia in front, 11-8. After Alvernia batted around, Newton came up again and hit a double to drive in another run. Mike Ramundo capped the inning with an RBI single through the right side to score Newton and give Alvernia the 13-8 lead.
After Albright got one back in the bottom of the fifth, Alvernia tacked two more runs on in the top of the sixth. Justin Ayala and Newton each drove a run in for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia pushed its lead to 22-9 with seven runs in the top of the seventh. Cirilli drove in two runs on a double down the left field line, and Ramundo hit a three-run homer to left field to highlight the inning for the Golden Wolves.
Albright would get four back in the bottom of the seventh for the 22-13 final.
Newton led Alvernia's offense with five hits on six at-bats for six RBIs and three runs scored. In addition to his home run in the 5th, three of Newton's hits were doubles. Cirilli also finished with six RBIs for Alvernia.
Michael Griffin picked up the win in four innings of relief work for Alvernia. He struck out three and allowed five hits.
In game two of the afternoon, Newton drove in Alvernia's first run of the game in the top of the first. Ramundo and Thomas Faggioni would also drive in runs on singles to put Alvernia up 3-0.
The Lions got one back on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first, but Alvernia extended its lead back up to three runs in the top of the second on an RBI single by Cirilli.
The Lions again cut it down to a one run lead in the bottom of the third after scoring two runs.
Alvernia responded in the top of the fourth with Nick Nutile, Ramundo and Faggioni each driving in a run to put Alvernia up 7-3.
Albright would score what would be its final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Alverni continued to build on its lead.
The Golden Wolves would go up 12-4 in the top of the sixth with Newton driving in a run on a double to right field, and Ramundo hitting a three-run home run on the next at bat. Matt Kinahan would capp off the inning with a solo shot to center field to put Alvernia up 12-4.
Alvernia would add one run in the top of the eight on a bases loaded walk, and would score its final two runs of the game in the top of the ninth on RBIs by Newton and Ramundo.
Ramundo finished with three hits and six RBIs with four runs scored to lead Alvernia. Newton finished with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Brian Kane picked up the win for Alvernia in five innings of work.
Today's doubleheader concluded Alvernia's regular season. The Golden Wolves await their opponent in the MAC Commonwealth quarterfinals, which begin May 1st. Alvernia currently sits in third place with one series in the Commonwealth remaining tomorrow. If Alvernia's position holds they would face the #6 seed in the conference, which currently sits as Messiah University. Lebanon Valley (the current #2 seed) vs. Stevenson University (the current #5 seed) is the only series yet to be finished.
