Alvernia's Season Comes To A Close At #1 Messiah

Grantham, Pa. (April 27, 2021) - #8 Alvernia University was eliminated from the MAC Commonwealth Women's Lacrosse postseason after falling to top-seeded Messiah University 22-8 on Tuesday night in postseason action at Messiah.

The Falcons wasted no time getting on the board after taking the opening draw control down the field and scoring just 12 seconds into the game.

Alvernia responded on the next possession though with Olivia McCambly evening the game up at 1-1 just a minute into action.

The Falcons scored the next two goals to go up 3-1, but Alvernia cut the lead back down to one goal after Erika Whitmoyer found Natalie Frantz for a Golden Wolves goal.

Messiah would go on a 4-0 run over the next seven minutes to take a 7-2 lead, but Alvernia would again chip away at Messiah's lead after the duo of Frantz and Whitmoyer connected for another Alvernia goal and Hannah Chadwick scored a free position goal to make it 7-4. 

Another 4-0 burst by the Falcons would put them ahead 11-4, but Alvernia put an end to the run with Megan Moky finding Gianna Taffo to make it 11-5 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half.

Messiah would score the final four goals of the half to go up 15-5 and put the running clock in place entering the second half.

The Falcons scored the opening five goals of the second half to extend their lead to 20-5 with 14 minutes remaining.

Alvernia would score three of the final five goals of the game for the 22-5 final. Whitmoyer scored two of the three, with Taffo adding the third.

Whitmoyer led Alvernia's offense with two goals and two assists. Frantz and Taffo each finished with two goals.

Kasey Fox finished with 14 saves in goal for Alvernia.

Alvernia's season concludes with an overall record 4-10. The undefeated Falcons move on to the MAC Commonwealth semifinals where they will take on #4 Widener University.
