Chester, Pa. (April 3, 2021) - Alvernia University (8-8, 8-8) locked up a postseason berth by taking two matches in a 3-0 manner against Widener University (4-12, 4-12) on Saturday in MAC Men's Volleyball action at Widener.

Alvernia needed to beat Widener in 3-0 or 3-1 wins in both matches to do its part in becoming the 5th seed in the championship side of the MAC Men's Volleyball postseason, and Alvernia did just that.

In match one of the day, Alvernia won 25-10, 25-10, and 25-14.

In set one, Alvernia went on a 5-0 run to jump out to a 9-3 lead early. Alvernia extended its lead to 19-6, and ultimately took set one 25-10 on a kill by Tyler Anderson.

Alvernia again used a series of runs in the second set and led 19-7 late. Back-to-back kills from Antonio Morales and Logan McGinley lifted Alvernia to another 25-10 set win,

In set three, Widener trailed Alvernia by just one point, 6-5, but Alvernia scored 10 of the next 12 to take a 16-7 lead. Alvernia would go on to score the final three of the third set, and took the 25-14 win and 3-0 match win on a kill from Logan McGinley.

Anderson led Alvernia in match one with 12 kills on 19 attacks with no errors.

Alvernia stayed hot in match two, winning again in straight sets: 25-7, 25-13, and 25-14.

The Golden Wolves scored the final ten points of set one, and the set win was capped off by a block from Anderson and Aaron Kuhlman for the 25th point of the 25-7 win.

The Pride played set two slightly closer, trailing Alvernia by just four points at the 11-7 mark. But, the Golden Wolves again used a 10-2 run to jump out to a 21-10 lead. Alvernia would finish off the set on a kill from Logan McGinley to take the 25-13 set win.

In set three, after the Pride scored the opening point, Alvernia scored 13 of the next 15 to extend its lead to 13-3. The Pride would then go on a small 5-0 run to bring it back to 13-8 lead in favor of Alvernia. Alvernia then had three straight opportunities for set and match point, and were finally able to take it on their fourth try on an attack error by the Pride.

McGinley led Alvernia with 13 kills with one error on 19 attacks.

With the 3-0 sweep in both matches, Alvernia secured itself as the 5th seed on the Championship side of the MAC Postseason Bracket. Alvernia will head to #4 Arcadia on Monday night at 7:00 PM. The winner of that match will take on top-seeded Messiah on Wednesday in the Championship semifinal.
