Softball Splits With Eastern

11 Game Win Streak Snapped In Extra-Inning Game Two Loss

Reading, Pa. (April 3, 2021) - #21 Alvernia University (12-2, 12-2) took game one of a Saturday doubleheader 7-1, but saw its 11 game win streak snapped with a 4-3 extra inning loss in game two to Eastern University (5-6, 5-6).

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia scored its first run of the game on a Kerstin Koenig single up the middle to score Maggie Loomis

Alvernia extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second with Sarah Reinert, Riley Shields, and Alyssa Acker each driving in runs on singles to the outfield.

The Golden Wolves scored another three in the bottom of the third to jump up to a 7-0 lead. Reinert, Shields, and Loomis each drove in runs on the inning.

The Eagles would score one run in the top of the fourth to prevent the shutout, but Alvernia would take the 7-1 win.

Reinert and Shields each led Alvernia with two hits and two RBIs. Reinert also scored two runs on the game along with Hope Robinson.

Shields picked up her seventh win of the season with a six strikeout, three hit performance.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single to right to score Reinert.

Alvernia extended its lead to 2-0 a field error during Devan Hudson's at bat in the bottom of the sixth that allowed Carlan Lazar to score.

The Eagles rallied in the top of the seventh scoring three runs on four hits to take a 3-2 lead.

Alvernia responded in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly by Koenig to score Loomis. Alvernia had the bases loaded with two outs, but was unable to convert.

The Eagles retook the lead on a single to center to go up 4-3.

Alvernia put the leadoff runner of the bottom of the eight on base when Paige Paciolla reached on a single to right. Paciolla advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Robinson. But, Alvernia's final two batters were retired in order as the Eagles hung on for the 4-3 win.

Shields went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead with an RBI to lead Alvernia's offense.

Alvernia continues its MAC Commonwealth schedule on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Stevenson to open the series with the Mustangs.
