St. David's, Pa. (May 4, 2021) - #5 Alvernia University came out on top of a MAC Commonwealth quarterfinal match over #4 Eastern University that lasted nearly five a half hours at Eastern University on Wednesday.

Alvernia University came out on top, winning the match 5-4. 

The Golden Wolves took a 2-1 lead coming out of doubles, with Alvernia winning at #1 and #2 doubles. Kevin Angeles/Michael Brophy won their match 8-1, and Thomas Figurelli/Christopher Lazdins took #2 doubles 8-2.

Alvernia extended its lead to 4-1 after Brophy won 6-4, 6-2 at #1 singles and Thomas Figurelli won 6-2, 6-3 at #3 singles.

Alvernia had an opportunity to seal the match - as playoff matches are not generally played in their entirety, only until a team clinches the match (at 5 points) - with Angeles leading his #2 singles match 6-3 after the first set. However, Eastern would come back to win the match after taking the final two sets 6-3, 6-4.

Eastern then closed the deficit to 4-3 as Eastern took #6 singles 6-4, 6-4. The Eagles then tied it at 4-4 after Alvernia dropped #4 singles 3-6, 1-6. 

The match would come down to #5 singles. Alvernia's Christopher Lazdins dropped the opening set in a tie breaker, but would go on to win his match and the team's match after taking sets two and three 6-2, 6-0. 

With the match win, Alvernia advances to the semifinals tomorrow. The Golden Wolves will head down to #1 Stevenson.
