Reading, Pa. (May 9, 2021) - #3 Alvernia University's 2021 campaign came to an end on Sunday following a 5-4 loss in game three of a best-of-three semifinal series against #2 Lebanon Valley College at Alvernia. 

The Dutchmen, playing as the home team with the higher seed at Alvernia, got to work in the bottom of the first scoring on a sacrifice fly to put Lebanon Valley up 1-0.

The Golden Wolves tied things up 1-1 in the top of the third with a solo shot over the left field fence by Billy Dougar.

The game would then enter a rain delay between the top and bottom of the third that lasted about 90 minutes.

Coming out of the delay, Alvernia posted three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Mike Cirilli drove in Joe Ginder to break the 1-1 tie, and Nick Nutile followed that with an RBI single through the left side to score Cirilli. In the following at bat, Kyler Newton drove a ball to nearly the exact same spot as Nutile to drive in Cirilli and put Alvernia up 4-1.

The Dutchmen responded in their half of the fifth with a two-run double to the right gap to cut Alvernia's lead down to one run, 4-3.

Lebanon Valley would then break the tie and take the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a double to left center to score two runs and put the Dutchmen up 5-4.

Alvernia would strand three runners over its final two offensive innings as the Dutchmen came away with the 5-4 win.

With the win, Lebanon Valley advances to the MAC Commonwealth Championship where they will take on the top-seeded York College Spartans.

Alvernia's 2021 season comes to a close with an overall record of 20-12-1.
