Alvernia Falls To Hartwick, 23-14

Oneonta, NY (September 11, 2021) - Hartwick College (1-0) would hold Alvernia University (0-2) scoreless in the first half as the Hawks would go on to take a 23-14 win over Alvernia on Saturday afternoon in non-conference Football action at Hartwick.

The Hawks received the opening kickoff and began their drive on their own 32. Hartwick began moving the ball down the field, using moderate gains on six rushing attempts to work their down to Alvernia's 37 yard line. Alvernia would break through the line and sack Hartwick quarterback Kyle Szokoli to seemingly put the Hawks in a 3rd and 10 situation, but the Hawks would end up with a first down following a dead ball unsportsmanlike penalty on Alvernia.

Hartwick's Davien Kuinlan would break off on a 22 yard on the next play, and would follow that with a five yard touchdown run. Following a successful extra point attempt, the Hawks led 7-0 with 9:27 left in the first quarter.

Alvernia would get nothing going on its opening drive, going 3-and out and punting the ball away.

The Golden Wolves would make a fourth down stop on their own 35 yard line following a nearly seven minute drive by the Hawks to keep it at 7-0.

A penalty would again come back and bite Alvernia, with a holding penalty negating a 13 yard run by Malcolm Carey to open Alvernia's next drive. Alvernia would go on to punt the ball away to Hartwick's 35.

After trading possessions, Alvernia got the ball back with 8:14 remaining in the half on its own 36 yard line. On the opening play of the drive, Alvernia quarterback attempted a pass into triple coverage that was intercepted by the Hawks and returned to Alvernia's 22 yard line.

Alvernia would force a field goal attempt on the ensuing drive, and the Golden Wolves appeared to block the attempt by the Hawks. But, a flag on the play for illegal formation on Alvernia gave the Hawks a first down and new life. Hartwick would need just one play, a rush up the middle, to reach the end zone. The extra point attempt was good and Hartwick went up 14-0 with 5:17 left in the half.

Penalties continued to hurt Alvernia on the next drive as Alvernia would again punt the ball away.

The Hawks marched down to Alvernia's 17 yard line where Alvernia forced the Hawks to attempt a field goal. The attempt would be no good as Alvernia kept it a two score game at 14-0 going into the half.

Alvernia would have to punt away its opening drive of the second half, but punter Ryan Long would pin the Hawks on their own one yard line. Alvernia forced a stop and received the ball on their own 46.

After moving the ball down to the Hartwick 32, Rosahac found Joseph Perkins on a 32 yard pass attempt for a touchdown with 2:48 remaining. The pass was Rosahac's first career collegiate touchdown pass. The PAT would be blocked and Hartwick would return it the length of the field for two points to keep it a two score game, 16-6.

The Hawks would respond, taking nearly seven minutes off the clock and capping the drive with a 28 yard touchdown pass to go up 23-6 with 10:42 left in the game.

The two teams would trade possessions, but Alvernia was able to get back within nine following a Malcolm Carey 10-yard touchdown run. Alvernia would convert a successful two-point conversion attempt with Rosahac connecting with Perkins to make it 23-14.

Alvernia would run out of time, as the Golden Wolves received the ball back with 18 seconds to play. Rosahac was able to make an attempt at the end zone, but the pass would be picked off as time expired.

Rosahac finished his afternoon with 140 yards on 13 completions with one touchdown and two interceptions. Carey would be held to just 85 yards on the ground. Perkins led Alvernia's receiving corp with four receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Tajon Whiten led Alvernia with 12 tackles, including two for a loss. Jamel Fleming finished with nine tackles and Tyzhir Morris and Marc Kauffman each had eight tackles.

Alvernia returns to action on Saturday with its home and MAC opener. The Golden Wolves will host Albright College in the first official game with the crosstown rival. The game will be a white out game for the Alvernia community.
