Middletown, Pa. (Sept. 25, 2021) - Alvernia University Women's Volleyball (6-7) took down Penn State Harrisburg (7-5), 3-1, and Marywood University (7-8), 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Penn State Harrisburg tri-match.
The Golden Wolves started the day strong as they faced off against Penn State Harrisburg. Alvernia jumped out to a quick start as
Allie Evangelista helped guide a 12-4 run while tallying two kills.
Olivia Frutiger racked up the final two kills to seal a 25-14 first set win.
The Lions bounced back quickly, taking the second set 25-20 and drawing the contest even at one apiece. The Golden Wolves fought back and forth in the third set before
Taylor Suto tallied three kills to jump-start a 5-2 run deep in the set. Alvernia claimed the third set 25-21 to go up 2-1 on the match.
After going down 5-2 early in the fourth set,
Rachel Sipling dished out three service aces to spark a 10-2 run for the Golden Wolves. Alvernia continued to apply the pressure with Frutiger tallying the game-clinching kill. The Golden Wolves claimed the set 25-17, and the match 3-1.
Alvernia stayed hot in their second contest with Suto propelling a 10-2 run to open up the first set against the Pacers. The Golden Wolves continued to push as the set progressed with Evangelista recording the final kill of the set, 25-22.
Marywood fought hard in the second set with neither team able to gain a steady grasp on the lead. The Pacers were up 21-20 late in the second set when Suto recorded a kill and a service ace to put Alvernia out in front by one. A slew of errors by Marywood would seal the set with the Golden Wolves winning 25-21.
The third and final set was much the same with Alvernia continuing to dominate. The Golden Wolves went on a 7-1 run as they looked to put the match away. Frutiger racked up two of the final three kills for Alvernia to put the match away 25-19 while securing the clean sweep, 3-0.
Against the Lions, Sipling led all players with 19 kills along with 12 digs and four service aces. Suto tacked on nine kills with 12 digs and four service aces while
Molly Gaffney dished out 20 assists.
Against Marywood, Frutiger led the pack with 11 kills, eight digs, and two service aces. Sipling recorded eight kills along with three digs while Suto tallied seven kills and four digs.
Alexis Schwenk dealt 15 assists along with three service aces.
Alvernia continues its season on Tuesday night with a MAC Commonwealth matchup against Messiah University.
