Golden Wolves Down Dutchmen, 66-58

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 12, 2022)- Alvernia University (7-6, 1-5) defeated Lebanon Valley College (7-9, 2-5) 66-58 Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Alvernia.
 
The Golden Wolves opened the contest with a quick 3-pointer from Jordan Karmonick, but the Dutchmen quickly responded with a layup of their own.
 
The two teams went back and forth throughout the first quarter, with neither team gaining much momentum. With 2:54 left in the opening stanza, Chenoa Bernhardt knocked down a free throw to cut the Dutchmen lead to two.
 
This gave the Alvernia offense life, as Tyra Robinson helped guide a 9-0 run to close out the quarter. The Golden Wolves ended the first quarter with the lead, 18-12.
 
Tamia Wessels expanded on Alvernia's lead, netting a three, which came off an assist from Taliyah Malone with 8:48 left to play in the second quarter.
 
The Golden Wolves' defense also stood out in the second stanza, holding the Dutchmen scoreless for nearly four minutes. Both teams battled it out the next few minutes, with Lebanon Valley netting the final basket of the quarter.
 
Alvernia ended the first half with a slim lead, 30-23.
 
The Golden Wolves started the second half hot, as Kayla Williams and Karmonick knocked down a pair of threes, pushing the lead to 13. Wessels finished a fastbreak layup shortly after.
 
Williams capped off the ten-point run with another fastbreak layup, which was assisted by Wessels. The Dutchmen were finally able to stop the run with a layup from Jamie Youngkin.
 
Lebanon Valley battled back, cutting the deficit back to just seven. Kylie Bradford was able to give the Golden Wolves some life with 49 seconds left in the third stanza, finishing a layup and pushing the lead back to nine.
 
The Dutchmen quickly responded, netting a layup of their own. Wessels was able to give Alvernia a boost to close out the third period, sinking the buzzer-beating layup with just one second left in the quarter.
 
The Golden Wolves ended the third quarter with a nine-point lead, 50-41.
 
The fourth quarter saw Alvernia open the scoring as Bradford finished a layup, pushing the lead to double digits. Both teams battled back and forth, with neither team finding a way to gain an edge.
 
Alvernia was able to keep up the pressure, pushing its lead to 14 with just 42 seconds left in regulation. Despite the Dutchmen scoring the last six points of the contest, the Golden Wolves were able to hold on.
 
Alvernia defeated the Lebanon Valley by eight points, with a final score of 66-58.
 
Williams led the Golden Wolves, tallying 17 points and five rebounds. Karmonick recorded 12 points, six boards, and four assists, while Wessels finished the night with ten points, five assists, and four rebounds.
 
The Golden Wolves are back in action Saturday on the road at Hood.
