Reading, Pa. (January 22, 2022)- Alvernia University (2-2) won the day, taking down Immaculata University (1-2) and Brooklyn College (0-2), in three sets apiece during non-conference men's volleyball action on Saturday at Alvernia.
Alvernia started the day strong as it matched up against Immaculata in the first contest. The Golden Wolves recorded the first three points of the opening set, with
Shane McNicholas and
Tyler Anderson each picking up a kill.
As the set progressed, the Mighty Macs were able to bring the score to within one. However, kills from
Aidan Wunderly and
Ian Rauh helped give the Golden Wolves life, leading them on a 4-0 run. Alvernia was able to power its way through the rest of the set, claiming the first stanza, 25-19.
The second set started back and forth, with the score knotted firmly, 4-4. This is where Wunderly and Rauh once again gave life to the Alvernia offense, kickstarting an 8-1 run. This momentum carried late into the set, as the Golden Wolves' offense continued to apply pressure. The second set was capped off with a service ace from
Brady Correll, giving Alvernia the win, 25-16.
The third set saw Alvernia claiming a quick 5-2 lead, with Correll picking up another two service aces. This is where Immaculata showed its resilience, as both teams fought back and forth before the Mighty Macs were able to take a 21-17 lead. Despite the effort, Alvernia's offense was able to storm back, propelled by a kill from
Nick Cummins.
The third set came down to the wire, with neither team willing to give an inch. However, Cummins was able to rack up two kills to boost the Golden Wolves over the Mighty Macs, 29-27, and sweep the contest 3-0.
Wunderly led all players in the first contest with nine kills to go along with five digs and two block assists. Cummins recorded five kills during the contest, with
Christian Mosley tallying five kills, five digs, and one block assist.
The second contest started back and forth, with both teams tied early at five. The Golden Wolves' offense was able to come alive, as
Caleb Whitehead and Cummins sparked an 11-1 run. Alvernia's offense kept the pressure on Brooklyn, dominating the rest of the set with a 25-12 win.
Alvernia's offense continued to dictate the contest, as
Ethyn Burczyk guided an 11-0 run to open up the set. The Bulldog's offense was finally able to get on the board with a kill from Zhao Ming Li. The Golden Wolves didn't wait long to bounce back, going on a 6-1 run, which was capped off by an ace from Mosley. Alvernia rode its offense the rest of the way, finishing the stanza on an 8-1 run and claiming the second set, 25-4.
The Golden Wolves' offense started the third set fast, with Mosley collecting three kills on a 6-1 run for Alvernia. Brooklyn was attempted to slow down Alvernia's offense, but to no avail as the Golden Wolves offense, led by Cummins, went on an 11-5 run. The rest of the set was back and forth, with the Bulldogs trying to claw their way back into it. Despite the effort, Alvernia sealed the sweep on a 3-0 run, which was capped off by a kill from Cummins. The Golden Wolves claimed the set 25-16, and the match 3-0.
Whitehead led all players in the second match, tallying ten kills, two block assists, and one service ace. Cummins recorded nine kills, six service aces, and two block assists. Mosley picked up four kills, four digs, and two service aces.
The Golden Wolves return to action next Saturday, matching up against MIT and NYU at the Kean University Invitational.
