PREVIEW: Football Heads to Williamsport For Matchup with Lycoming

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 21, 2022) - Alvernia University is on the road for the second week in a row as the Golden Wolves head north to Williamsport, Pa. for a MAC Football matchup with Lycoming College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.

The 2-4, 1-3 Golden Wolves are coming off a 19-16 win over Widener College on the road last Saturday. It was Alvernia's first MAC win since the Golden Wolves defeated Lycoming 29-24 at home on October 12, 2019.

Lycoming College (2-4, 1-3) is coming off its third straight loss following a 24-10 setback at home against Stevenson University last week. Lycoming is looking for its first win since shutting out Albright College 45-0 on September 24.

Both teams are looking to pick up their second MAC win and third win overall. Alvernia is 2-1 on the road this season, while Lycoming is winless at home this season.

Inside the Series:
Alvernia is 1-2 against the Warriors, with the last matchup seeing Lycoming College blank Alvernia 48–0 at home in 2021 in Alvernia's season finale. Alvernia has been shutout twice against the Warriors with the  48-0 loss in 2021 and a 52-0 loss at Lycoming in Alvernia's first season in 2018.

In last season's matchup, Lycoming needed just 242 yards of total offense to defeat the Golden Wolves. The Warriors scored three touchdowns in the air and picked up three more on the ground. They capped off their scoring with a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Scouting the Golden Wolves:
Alvernia is averaging 20.33 points per game and sits in seventh in the MAC in scoring average. The Alvernia offense is fourth in the MAC in total production, averaging 327 yards per game with an average of 5.5 yards a play. Alvernia is averaging 197.5 yards per game in the air, and 129.5 yards of rushing per game.

Alvernia's defense is allowing 36.2 points per game. The 16 points it gave up to Widener last week was the lowest amount of points given up in a game since a 10-7 loss to King's in 2021. The Golden Wolves defense allows 411 yards of offense per game and 6.1 yards per play. They give up 178.2 yards on the ground and 232.8 yards in the air.

Alvernia Players to Watch:
Monte McMorris - Quarterback: After coming into Alvernia as quarterback, McMorris was moved to tight end prior to the season opener. He has since moved back to quarterback, with his first start coming last week in the win against Widener. McMorris went 11-for-21 for 170 yards and a touchdown. He had a 50 yard connection with EJ Lee for his longest completion of the afternoon.

EJ Lee - Running Back: Lee has been a threat for Alvernia all season, and is averaging 82.2 yards of rushing a game and a team-high 42.3 yards receiving a game. His average of 124.5 all-purpose yards a game is second in the MAC. Last week against Widener, Lee ran for 65 yards and had three receptions for 97 yards.

Marc Kauffman - Linebacker: Kauffman is coming off a career week for Alvernia where he earned MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance. He had two interceptions against the Pride, including one for a touchdown and the other was a game-sealing forced turnover. Kauffman is averaging five tackles a game and has 30 tackles total on the season.

Jeromy Sayles - Linebacker: Sayles has floated between defensive end and linebacker this season, and was a force in the backfield for Alvernia last week. Sayles had a team-high eight tackles against Widener last week, including a sack-fumble. He has 24 tackles on the year, including three for a loss and a team-high 2.5 sacks for 25 yards.

Alvernia Keys to the Game:
Apply Defensive Pressure: Lycoming averages just 3.6 yards per play on offense. They average just 4.5 yards a passing attempt and 2.8 yards a carry. If Alvernia's defense performs like it did last week, it can limit both the run and pass game of the Warriors.

Force Turnovers: Lycoming's offense is not high producing and has 18 turnovers on the season. Alvernia did a fantastic job forcing turnovers at Widener and will need to carry that momentum into its game with the Warriors.

Protect the Backfield: Alvernia has been tackled for a loss 37 times this season, including a season-high nine times for 43 yards last week against Widener. The Golden Wolves will need to protect behind the line of scrimmage to keep the offense moving forward.

Scouting the Warriors
Lycoming has not won a game in nearly a month. The Warriors have three straight losses to teams that have a combined three losses on the season. Lycoming is averaging 19.2 points per game and averages 218.8 yards a game. The Warriors average a MAC low 3.6 yards per play.  They average 92.7 yards of rushing a game and 2.8 yards a carry. The Warriors also average 126.2 yards in the air a game and 4.5 yards per reception.

The Lycoming defense allows 23 points per game, and allow 345.7 yards of offense a game. The Warriors give up 131.8 yards per game on the ground, and allow 213.8 yards per game in the air.

Lycoming Players to Watch
Elijah Shemory - Quarterback: Shemory has played in all six of Lycoming's games this season. He has a 41.1 completion percentage with six touchdowns on the year. He averages 106.3 passing yards a game and has thrown six interceptions on the year. Shemory is also good for an average of 14.7 rushing yards a game, and averages 1.5 yards a scramble.

Brandon Timothy - Wide Receiver: Timothy is Shemory's top target with 16 completions for 215 on the season. He averages 13.44 yards a completion and 35.8 yards a game. He has two of Lycoming's seven passing touchdowns, and has a season-long reception of 60 yards.

Ian Plankenhorn - Kicker: Plankenhorn is Lycoming's leading scorer with 31 points on the season. He has six field goals on 11 attempts and is perfect 13-for-13 on extra points. Plankenhorn also averages 57.7 yards per kickoff and has five touchbacks. He has also yet to kickoff out of bounds.

Hunter Campbell - Defensive Back: Campbell is the leading tackler on the year with 47 tackles. He has 2.5 tackles for a loss and has a half a sack. Campbell also has two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and one pass breakup.
