Spartans Down Golden Wolves 3-1

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 27, 2022) - Alvernia University (10-14, 2-6) fell to York College (12-13, 4-4) 3-1, in MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball action Thursday at Alvernia. 

Alvernia senior setter Molly Gaffney tallied her 1,000th assist of her career on the fourth point of the first set when she assisted Rachel Sipling on a kill. Gaffney finished the match with 19 assists to end her career with 1,017 total assists. She's the fifth Alvernia women's volleyball student-athlete to reach the 1,000 assist milestone.

The Golden Wolves jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and forced a Spartan timeout early in the first set. Sipling tallied two kills, Allie Evangelista hammered home one and Juliana McGlone added an ace for the Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia stretched its lead to 10-0 before York battled back to cut the Golden Wolves lead to 16-7 midway through the first set. 

The Spartans responded by scoring eight of the next 11 points to pull within four, with Alvernia leading 19-15. York rattled off a 7-4 run that cut the Alvernia lead to 23-22 before tallying the final four points of the set to take the first set 26-24. 

The second set began with York and Alvernia trading points before the Spartans took a 8-7 lead. The Golden Wolves responded with a 7-1 scoring run to take a 14-9 lead. Jamie Pierce, Gaffney and Sipling all tallied kills during the run. 

Alvernia continued to add to its lead and with an 18-13 lead the Golden Wolves rattled off five straight points after kills from McGlone, Evangelista and Emma Remaley to give Alvernia a 23-13 lead. 

York tallied three straight points in response to the Alvernia run, but it wasn't enough as Alvernia took the second set 25-16 to tie the match at one. 

The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set before extending their lead to 11-6 early in the set. 

York continued to add to the lead, making it 16-10 with kills from Claire Shorb, Morgan Nolte and Jennifer Taylor. 

The Golden Wolves fought back to pull within three thanks to kills from Sipling and Gaffney before the Spartans tallied seven of the next eight points en route to a 25-16 victory in the third set and took a 2-1 match lead. 

The final set began with Alvernia taking a 7-5 lead before York tallied five of the next six points to take a three point lead. The Golden Wolves responded with a 5-1 scoring run to take a 13-12 lead midway through the fourth set. Evangelista and McGlone tallied kills and Remaley added two aces. 

York bounced back with a 7-2 run that would see them take a 19-15 lead late in the fourth set. Madison Kauffman and Nolte both had kills for the Spartans. 

The Golden Wolves tallied two points to pull within three before York rattled off the final five points of the set with Shorb tallying four of the final five points to take the fourth set 25-17 and seal a 3-1 match victory. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Sipling with 15 kills and 19 digs, Gaffney tallied 19 assists and two blocks. McGlone ended with four aces and Evangelista tallied a team high three blocks.

This match marked the end of the 2022 campaign for Alvernia as they finished 10-14 overall and 2-6 in MAC Commonwealth play.
