Golden Wolves Cruise Past Griffins, 83-67

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 22, 2022) - Alvernia University (4-1) put up 50 points in the second half en route to an 83-67 win over Gwynedd Mercy University (0-4) on Tuesday night in non-conference men's basketball action at Alvernia.

Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Alvernia worked its way into the game. The Griffins led 13-8 five minutes later, before a putback layup by Kyle Gordon sparked a 13-0 run for the Golden Wolves. A 3-pointer by Jacob Stoudt evened the game up at 13-13, and back-to-back threes by Robert Mullan and Jalil Schenck capped off the run and gave Alvernia an eight point lead, 21-18, with eight minutes to play.

A 3-pointer by Gwynedd Mercy's Johaan Vinson brought the Griffins back within three, 23-20, with 5:17 to go in the half, but a 3-pointer by Schenck made it a two possession game, 26-20, with 3:21 to play.

The Griffins and Golden Wolves traded points the rest of the half as Alvernia took the 33-28 lead into the break.

Gwynedd Mercy came out of the break hot and a quick four points brought the Griffins within one, 33-32. Alvernia regrouped and a set of made free throws by Jakob Kelly, a 3-pointer by Malik Green, and a fastbreak layup by Nigel Cooke pushed Alvernia's lead back up to eight, 40-32, with just under 17 minutes to go.

A jumper by Malik Green sparked a 11-4 run by the Golden Wolves. The run included four points by Green and five from Mullan as Alvernia pushed its lead to 51-36, with 13:44 to play.

The Golden Wolves maintained that lead the rest of the way, never letting the Griffins closer than 10 points. Twice Alvernia pushed its lead to 18 points, both times off the hand of Nigel Cooke. Alvernia scored four of the final six points of the game - all off of free throws by Cooke - as Alvernia came away with the 83-67 win over the Griffins.

Green led Alvernia with 22 points and nine boards, shooting 9-for-14 from the floor. Mullan finished with 16 points and was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Alvernia is off for just over a week as the Golden Wolves return to action on Wednesday, November 30th for its MAC Commonwealth opener against Widener.
