Fords Edge Golden Wolves, 49-42

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 10, 2022) - In a game that saw five ties and five lead changes, Haverford College (8-3) came out on top with a 49-42 win over Alvernia University (6-4) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at Alvernia.

Alvernia led for a total of nearly 21 minutes to Haverford's 16 minutes, but it was the Fords who held the lead for the final 5:54 of the game as Alvernia was held to just two points compared to Haverfords 12 in the final six minutes.

The Golden Wolves scored the first points of the game on a Taliyah Malone 3-pointer off of a steal by Cathryn Kramer after 74 seconds of action. The Fords did not get on the board until over a minute later as Gia Flamini hit a layup to make it a 3-2 game.

A putback layup by Kelly Fetter and a 3-pointer by Jordan Karmonick gave Alvernia the 8-2 lead with 5:53 to play in the opening quarter. The Fords called a timeout and regrouped. They came out of the timeout scoring a layup and a 3-pointer on the next two possessions to quickly get within one, 8-7.

The Fords tied it up on a free throw with 4:35 remaining in the first, but Alvernia retook the lead on a Nicole Etchison layup 25 seconds later.

A layup by Kayla Williams made it a 12-8 game in favor of Alvernia with a minute and a half to go in the first, but Haverford scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 13-12 lead into the second frame.

The Fords kept Alvernia off the board for nearly two and a half minutes to open the second quarter while Haverford tacked five onto its lead to make it an 18-12 game.

A 3-pointer by Malone ended Alvernia's scoring drought and a layup by Fetter a minute later brought Alvernia within one, 18-17, with 6:29 to play in the half.

Alvernia tied it up at 20-20 three minutes later on a layup by Jordyn Ingelido, and a series of made free throws by Meghan Futh gave Alvernia the 22-20 lead with 2:41 to play in the half.

Alvernia held Haverford to just free throws the rest of the quarter, while Alvernia scored three more on a free throw by Williams and another layup by Ingelido. Alvernia held the slight 25-23 lead going into the half.

A layup by the Fords to open the second half evened the game up at 25-25, but a layup by Tamia Wessels on Alvernia's next possession gave Alvernia the 27-25 lead.

After neither team scored for nearly two minutes, a 3-pointer by Malone gave Alvernia the 30-25 lead with 7:29 to play in the third quarter.

Following a free throw by the Fords, a layup by Malone gave Alvernia its largest lead of the game, 32-26, with 6:14 to play in the quarter.
The Fords worked their way back in over the next five minutes, and a 3-pointer by Eleanor Alix with 1:38 to play in the quarter gave Haverford the 35-34 lead. That 3-pointer marked the final points of the quarter as Haverford took the one point lead going into the fourth.

A 3-pointer by Jordan Karmonick opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and gave Alvernia back the lead, 37-35, with 8:50 to play. But, a minute and a half later, the Fords knocked down a layup to even the game back at 37-37.

A made free throw by Wessels and a layup by Kramer gave Alvernia the three point lead, 40-37, but the Golden Wolves could not hang on to it. Alvernia's scoring went cold as the Fords held Alvernia scoreless and the Fords took the lead with 5:54 to play.

The Golden Wolves could not get anything going offensively to keep up with Haverford as the Fords went on a 12-2 run over the final six minutes. Alvernia's only two points in that run came off a layup by Kramer with ten seconds to play. That layup only got Alvernia within five, 47-42. Alvernia was forced to foul the Fords, and Haverford converted its final two free throws to seal the 49-42 win.

Malone led Alvernia with 13 points - including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc - with five rebounds and three steals. Karmonick finished with a team-high nine rebounds.

Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday as the Golden Wolves resume conference play at York.
