Golden Wolves Fly Past Eagles, 80-58

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 20, 2022) - Alvernia University (9-4) closed out the first half of its season with an 80-58 win over Juniata College (3-6) on Tuesday evening at Alvernia.

The game was even at 20 each through the first quarter before Alvernia pulled away with a 22 point second quarter to Juniata's 13. Alvernia then cruised through the third and fourth quarters, outsourcing the Eagles 38-25 in the final 20 minutes.

The Golden Wolves opened the game with a fast start, as layups from Taliyah Malone, Cathryn Kramer, and Kayla Williams, along with a 3-pointer from Tamia Wessels, gave Alvernia the 9-2 lead after 2:16 of play.

The Eagles then rattled off a 11-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 13-11 lead over Alvernia.

Alvernia called a timeout to regroup, and Jordan Karmonick came out of the brief break with a 3-pointer to give Alvernia back the lead, 14-13.

After Alvernia pushed it to a 17-13 lead following a layup and and-one free throw by Williams, the Eagles scored back-to-back jumpers to tie the game up at 17-17. The Eagles then took a 20-17 lead with 1:25 to play in the quarter on an Emily McCann three, but Malone matched the three with one of her own to tie the game up at 20-20.

Karmonick opened the second quarter with a quick run of five points to make it a 25-20 game. The Eagles then got within two, 27-25, with 7:50 left in the second quarter before Alvernia broke off on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to make it a 37-25 game with just under four minutes to play in the quarter. The run included 3-pointers from Karmonick and Malone, as well as a layup from Kylie Bradford off the bench.

Alvernia nearly took a double-digit lead into the half, but the Eagles scored a layup in the final seconds to make it a nine point game, 42-33, going into the break.

The Golden Wolves came out of the break firing. Kramer accounted for the first seven points for Alvernia in the second half as Alvernia built its lead up to 13, 46-33.

A 3-pointer by Wessels kept Alvernia's momentum rolling and gave Alvernia a 16 point lead, 52-36, with 7:36 to play in the quarter.

The Eagles went on a quick 6-0 run to make it a ten point game, 52-42, but Alvernia found its rhythm again with a layup by Williams. The Golden Wolves added two more on a pair of made free throws by Jordyn Ingelido. A Meghan Ruth jumper gave Alvernia a 16 point lead with 2:40 to play in the quarter and marked the final points of the third frame as Alvernia took a 58-42 lead into the final ten minutes.

Alvernia and Juniata matched jumpers to open the quarter, but Alvernia then knocked down back-to-back threes by Wessels and Malone to make it a 22 point game, 66-44, with 8:00 to play.

The Golden Wolves pushed their lead to 26, 74-48, with just under five minutes to play on a Kramer layup and cruised to the finish from there. A layup from Bradford with 30 seconds to play marked Alvernia's final points of the game as the Golden Wolves came away with the 80-56 win.

Karmonick finished just shy of a triple-double to lead Alvernia. The junior had a team-high 17 points, team-high eight assists, and finished with nine boards alongside Kramer. Kramer also had 11 points with her nine rebounds. Malone was 3-for-5 from 3-point range and finished with 15 points.
