Alvernia Hits Century Mark in 100-90 Win Over Valley Forge

Reading, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2022) - Alvernia University (16-5) put up 100 points for the first time since 2010 as the Golden Wolves defeated the University of Valley Forge (5-14) 100-90 on Thursday night in non-conference men's basketball action at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.

Taking a break from its MAC Commonwealth schedule, Alvernia's offense did not take a night off. Following a 51 point first half, Alvernia posted 49 in the second frame to hit the century mark for the first time in a win since November 20, 2010. That came in a 106-49 win over Valley Forge Military Academy during the Alvernia Tip-off Tournament top open the 2010 season. Alvernia also posted 110 points in a double-overtime loss later that season. Tonight was the first time since then that Alvernia put up triple digits.

After a sloppy first minute, Alvernia opened the scoring with Malik Green scoring a layup off a steal for the 2-0 lead.

The Patriots evened it up with a layup of their own on the next possession, and neither team could distance themselves from one another for the next five minutes.

Leading Valley Forge by five, 14-9, at the 13:28 mark of the first quarter, Alvernia's Steve Pierce hit a layup and Green knocked down a three to push Alvernia's lead to ten, 19-9, with 12:21 on the clock.

Valley Forge chipped away at Alvernia's ten point lead over the next four minutes, and a 3-pointer from Jesse Mateo with 8:28 left in the first half brought the Patrios back within two, 26-24.

Alvernia then went on a 15-2 run over three minutes to build some distance from the Patriots, 41-26, with just over five minutes remaining in the half. The run was capped by a Jacob Stoudt three and a Jakob Kelly layup.

A set of made free throws by Malik Green three minutes later gave Alvernia a 17 point advantage, 47-30.

The Alvernia advantage hovered around 15 points the rest of the half, and a buzzer-beating jumper by Justin Ramsey-Blythe gave Alvernia a 15 point lead, 51-36, going into the break.

Alvernia kept its foot on the gas coming out of the half. Seven minutes into the action, Kelly knocked down a three to give Alvernia a 72-53 advantage. On Alvernia's next possession, Kelly dunked it down to put Alvernia ahead 21, 74-53.

The Golden Wolves kept a comfortable lead the rest of the way. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Robert Mullan gave Alvernia its largest lead of the contest, 96-72, with 4:21 to play.

Alvernia moved into a zone and started to walk the ball down the court as the game entered its final minutes. The Golden Wolves hit the century mark with a free two by Luke Edwards for its final points of the game.

The Patriots scored the final points of the game as Alvernia came away with the 100-90 win.

Four Golden Wolves reached double-digit scoring, with Green leading the way with 17 points. Kelly and Stoudt each finished with 14 points, and Edwards finished with a career-high 13.  Avery Walker led Alvernia with six boards.

The Golden Wolves return to action on Saturday hosting Messiah University at 3 PM.
