Annville, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2022) - After trailing Lebanon Valley College (10-11, 5-9) 22-9 after the first quarter, Alvernia University (10-11, 3-10) was able to get back within two in the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback as the Golden Wolves fell to Lebanon Valley College, 64-52, on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Lebanon Valley.
During the loss, sophomore Jordan Karmonick broke the Alvernia record for consecutive made free throws. With two made free throws on her first two attempts of the game, Karmonick reached 20 made free throws in a row. Her streak started back at Hood College on January 15th with three made free throws to close out the game. Her streak peaked at Albright, going six-for-six on the road, where she tied the previous record of 18 consecutive free throws. She then extended the streak tonight, making her first two opportunities to reach 20 straight. Her new record surpasses the 18 consecutive made attempts held by Dawn Emert during the 1922 season.
After Alvernia opened the scoring with a Tamia Wessels jumper, Lebanon Valley answered with a 3-pointer for the lead. But, Wessels responded with a layup to put Alvernia back in front, 4-3.
A 3-pointer from Karmonick gave Alvernia a 7-5 advantage with 7:21 left in the first, but Lebanon Valley went on a 17-2 run to close out the first quarter with a 22-9 lead.
Lebanon Valley built its lead up to 16, 26-10, after a minute of second quarter action. Lebanon Valley held around a 15 point advants for the next five minutes, but a Jannelle Robisnon jumper at the 3:55 mark brought Alvernia within 14, 28-14. The Robinson field goal sparked a 10-0 run to bring Alvernia within four, 28-24. Robinson bookended the Alvernia run with another layup with 45 seconds to go to bring the game within four.
Lebanon Valley scored the final points of the half with an Allison Bimmer three to make it a seven point game in favor of the Dutchmen, 31-24, going into the break.
After Alvernia struggled to find its rhythm in the opening minutes of the third quarter as Lebanon Valley built its lead back into double-digits. The Golden Wolves pushed back though, and a Tyra Robinson layup with 4:10 left in the third quarter brought Alvernia back within four, 39-35.
Lebanon Valley did not allow Alvernia to get any closer in the third quarter as the Dutchmen took an eight point lead, 45-37, into the final frame.
The Golden Wolves got as close as two, 47-45, on a Wessels free throw, with 6:09 left in the game. Lebanon Valley would not allow the Golden Wolves to get any closer as the Dutchmen built their lead back up and ultimately took the 12 point win, 64-52.
Kayla Williams led Alvernia's offense at Lebanon Valley with 18 points. Tyra Robinson finished with 12 points. Both Karmonick and Jannelle Robinson finished with double-digit rebounds, with Jannelle Robinson collecting 12 and Karmonick recorded 11.
