Golden Wolves Defeat Bears in Home Opener, 7-3

Reading, Pa. (March 18, 2022)- Alvernia University (5-9-1) used two home runs to power past Ursinus College (5-9) 7-3 in a non-conference baseball matchup Friday afternoon at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves kicked off the contest fast, with Lucas Floyd scoring off a wild pitch from Ursinus. Alvernia ended the first inning on top with a slim one-point lead.

The third inning proved fruitful for the Golden Wolves, with Connor Friedel sending a solo single deep to left field. This powerful swing gave Alvernia a 2-0 lead partway through the inning. The Golden Wolves added to their lead in the third, with Nick Nutile singling to left field and driving in Joe Ginder. Alvernia ended the third inning on top of Ursinus, 3-0.

The Golden Wolves picked up where they left off in the bottom of the fourth, with Brandon Smith singling to get on base. Kyler Newton took advantage of the momentum, recording Alvernia's second home run of the contest, driving in Smith and pushing the lead to five.

Ursinus found a way to stop the run, recording three runs in the top of the fifth and making it a 5-3 game. Alvernia answered half an inning later, with Thomas Faggioni sending a single through the right side. This hit allowed Ginder to come home and push the Alvernia lead back up to three.

The Golden Wolves recorded another run in the bottom of the seventh, with Floyd being driven in by Faggioni. The Golden Wolves had the game under control going into the ninth, with Anthony Mortimer faking out a runner to end the contest. Alvernia ended the contest on top of the Ursinus 7-3.

Nutile led the Golden Wolves with three hits and one RBI, while Floyd and Ginder tallied two hits apiece.

Pitching duties were split between Jake Reese, Shayne Ostrowsky, Josh Kreider, and Anthony Mortimer each saw time on the mound. Reese got the start, allowing just two hits over four innings and striking out three.
