Late Push Not Enough as Alvernia Falls to Mighty Macs, 10-8

Immaculata Pa. (Mar. 2, 2022)- Four late goals were not enough as Alvernia University (0-3) dropped a 10-8 decision to Immaculata University (1-0) in a non-conference men's lacrosse matchup Wednesday night at Immaculata.

The Golden Wolves applied early pressure, as Ryan Gilman and Louis Ferrara recorded shots early. Despite the early opportunities, the Mighty Macs would be the first to break the tie, slipping in a shot with 10:27 left in the opening stanza.

The Golden Wolves did not wait long to respond, as Kenneth Howley scored two minutes later to draw the match even, 1-1. Immaculata answered right back, scoring two quick goals just minutes later.

Alvernia cut the game back down to one, 3-2, with 1:21 left in the opening quarter, as Peter Capasso picked up a goal, coming off an assist from Keith Lake. The Mighty Macs closed out the opening quarter on top of the Golden Wolves, 3-2.

Alvernia opened the second quarter with a goal from Cade Campbell, again off an assist from Lake, to even the game up at 3-3. As the quarter progressed, defense reigned, with both teams only allowing one shot over five minutes.

Immaculata eventually broke the tie with 5:29 left in the second quarter as a goal from Steve Long put the Mighty Macs back on top.

Just one minute later, an Alvernia goal by Colin McFadyen tied the game up again, this time at 4-4, with just over four minutes left in the first half.

The half ended with the score even, 4-4.

Immaculata kicked off the scoring in the third quarter, recording the go-ahead goal with 11:34 left in the stanza. The Mighty Macs grew their lead throughout the quarter, capitalizing on three more opportunities and taking an 8-4 lead into the fourth quarter.

Immaculata opened the fourth with a quick goal with 13:44 left in the contest. The Mighty Macs continued to control the contest, pushing their lead to six with a late goal.

Despite the deficit, the Golden Wolves continued to battle as Howley recorded a goal with 3:40 left in the match. Alvernia kept fighting, with Ferrara recording a goal with 1:06 left to play. Campbell and Dylan Mercadante each scored in the final minute of the contest, but it was too little too late as Immaculata ended the contest with the 10-8 win over the Golden Wolves.

Jared Devine ended the contest with ten saves, while Campbell recorded two goals and one assist.

The Golden Wolves return to action Sunday, March 13th, as they face off against Westminster College at home.
