Reading, Pa. (Mar 5, 2022)- Alvernia University (8-6, 3-2) executed a clean sweep in a 3-0 win over King's College (11-6, 1-4) during a MAC men's volleyball matchup Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.
Nick Cummins kicked off the match, recording a quick kill to open the first stanza. The Monarchs quickly responded, using a 5-1 run to take a three-point lead. The Golden Wolves, led by Cummins and
Tyler Anderson, went on a 7-4 run to take a 10-9 lead as the set progressed. The run was capped off by a kill from
Shane McNicholas, which came off a set by
Brady Correll.
Alvernia stayed in control the rest of the stanza, with King's able to tie the match twice but never get back out in front. Anderson capped off the first set, securing the final kill off an assist from
Ethyn Burczyk. The Golden Wolves claimed the first set, 25-22.
The second stanza started close, with King's holding a slim one-point lead. The Golden Wolves received a much-needed spark from McNicholas and
Christian Mosley, going on a 7-1 run and taking a 10-5 lead.
Alvernia kept up the pressure, with Anderson and
Brian Rea keeping the momentum going. As the set progressed, the Monarchs brought the score back to within two. However, two kills from Cummins, as well as an ace from Burczyk, helped guide a 3-0 Golden Wolves run, giving them the lead, 19-14.
The Golden Wolves ended the second stanza on a 4-2 run, with Aiden Wunderly recording a service ace to end the set. Alvernia ended the second set on top of King's 25-20.
The third set was evenly matched early, with the score knotted, 6-6. Alvernia's offense found a way to break through, using a 5-0 run partway through the set to take a four-point lead. As the set progressed, the Golden Wolves stayed on top, with Cummins and Anderson guiding the offense.
The Monarchs found a way to climb back late in the third stanza, going on a 6-1 run to tie the match up, 22-22. Despite the strong effort, the Golden Wolves proved to be too much for the Monarchs, as Mosley and Correll led the way for a 3-0 run. Alvernia ended the third set on top of King's, 25-22, and claimed the day, 3-0.
Anderson led the Golden Wolves with 15 kills and three digs. Cummins recorded 14 kills, four digs, and two service aces, while Mosley tallied eight kills, ten digs, and three service aces. Burczyk led the team with 24 assists, while
Jonny Ortega collected 11 digs and two assists.
The Golden Wolves return to action Wednesday as they travel to take on Eastern.
