Alvernia Improves to 2-2 in Spring Break Action

Clermont, Fla. (March 8, 2022) - Alvernia University (2-2) went 2-1 over the last two days in spring break action in Clermont, Florida at the 2022 Spring Games.

Alvernia picked up a 15-2 win over Rivier on Monday, and then split on Tuesday with a 7-1 win over Lake Forest and a 3-2 loss to Marietta. 

Alvernia vs. Rivier
Alvernia posted 13 runs over the first two innings en route to a 15-2 win over Rivier on Tuesday. The Golden Wolves put up six in the first and added seven in the second before tacking on its final two in the third.

Alvernia picked up its six runs in the first off of just four hits, and scored seven on six hits and three Rivier errors in the second. The Golden Wolves then added two more in the third off of one hit and two errors.

Sarah Reinert, Maggie Loomis, Jaclyn Barbera, and Kerstin Koenig each recorded two hits. Koenig added three RBIs and Barbera scored three runs. 

Loomis picked up her first win of the season, recording four strikeouts.

Alvernia vs. Lake Forest
Alvernia started off its third day in Florida with a 7-1 win over Lake Forest. 

Lake Forest opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but Alvernia evened it up with Reinert scoring on a wild pitch.

Alvernia broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third with Reinert scoring on a sacrifice hit by Barbera.

The Golden Wolves then added on another two in the bottom of the fourth to go up 4-1. Koenig scored on a single to center by Tara Tumasz, and Reinert then drove in Tumasz on a single to center.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ally Kirschner drove in Hope Robinson to give Alvernia the 5-1 lead, and back-to-back RBI singles by Loomis and Julia Burkhardt made it a 7-1 game after six innings.

Loomis forced a double play in the top of the seventh to help secure the 7-1 win.

Loomis struck out seven to pick up her second win of the week. Reinert and Loomis each finished with two hits, and Burkhardt finished with two RBIs. 

Alvernia vs. Marietta
Alvernia led 2-0 early over Marietta in its second game of the day, but Marietta put up three in the bottom of the sixth to take the 3-2 win.

Reinert scored the first run of the game in the top of the first after scoring on a Burkhardt groundout to second. Reinert then made it a 2-0 game in the top of the third after scoring on a passed ball. Reinert reached early in the inning on a double and advanced to third on a Loomis single.

Marietta took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits - including two extra base hits. 

Alvernia was unable to threaten in its half of the seventh as the Golden Wolves were retired in order.

Loomis finished game two with three strikeouts, and Reinert led the offense with two hits and two runs scored.

The Golden Wolves are off on Wednesday and return to action on Thursday with games against Marywood and the University of Pitt-Greensburg.
