Ewing, NJ (April 12, 2022) - The College of New Jersey (12-10) held off a late inning push by Alvernia University (12-18-1) to defeat the Golden Wolves by a 5-4 decision on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at TCNJ. 

The Lions built a 5-0 lead after five innings, scoring two of its five runs off of solo homers. 

Alvernia stranded three base runners in the top of the fifth, but began to work its way back into the contest in the top of the sixth. With two on and one out in the top of the sixth, Luca Grammatica singled through the right side to drive in Lucas Floyd and Thomas Faggioni. A bases-loaded walk on Justin Ayala's at-bat brought in Alvernia's third and final run of the inning to make it a 5-3 game.

Alvernia did not allow a hit the rest of the way, but it could also not get a run across the plate. The Golden Wolves stranded five between the seventh and eighth innings.

The Golden Wolves threatened in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run on a Grammatica single to right to cut TCNJ's lead to one, 5-4. 

Alvernia had the bases loaded with two outs, but the Lions ended the threat on a fielder's choice to come away with the 5-4 win over the Golden Wolves.

Zach Rogacki and Grammatica went 4-for-5 at the plate for Alvernia, with Grammatica driving in three runs.

Alvernia returns to action on Thursday with a mid-week conference doubleheader against Hood College.
