Pride Down Golden Wolves, 3-0

Alvernia Set to Host Arcadia Monday in MAC Playoffs

Chester, Pa. (Apr. 02, 2022)- Alvernia University (13-11, 7-6) dropped its regular-season finale against Widener University (8-13, 3-10) 3-0 in a MAC men's volleyball matchup Saturday afternoon at Widener.

The Pride opened the contest strong, taking an 8-2 run over the Golden Wolves. Throughout the stanza, Widener continued to build its lead taking a 16-7 lead partway through the set. First-Year Nick Cummins recorded a kill to try and stop the Pride's run. Despite the effort, Widener claimed the first set on top of Alvernia, 25-16.

Widener carried its momentum into the second set, kicking the set off with a 7-2 run. Tyler Anderson racked up a kill early, helping the Golden Wolves trim the deficit to three. Despite the effort, the Pride continued to grow their lead, taking a 17-7 lead midway in the set.

The Golden Wolves kept fighting, regardless of the huge lead for the Pride. Anderson and Ian Rauh guided Alvernia on a 7-0 run late in the set, making it a 20-16 game in favor of Widener. The Pride managed to fend off the strong effort from the Golden Wolves, closing out the contest on a 5-3 run and finishing the second set on top, 25-20.

The third stanza was a close affair, with both teams knotted firmly 7-7. As the set progressed, neither team was able to gain control, with Brady Correll and Cummins helping keep the contest close. However, a late run from the Pride gave Widener the four-point cushion it needed. Widener ended the third set on top of Alvernia, 25-23, and finished the contest with a 3-0 victory.

Cummins led the Golden Wolves with eight kills, while Anderson tallied seven kills and five digs. Correll dished out 23 assists in the loss to the Pride.

Despite the loss to Widener, the Golden Wolves finished the season in fourth after Arcadia's loss to Stevens Tech this afternoon. #4 Alvernia is set to host #5 Arcadia at Alvernia Monday at 7 PM. The winner of Monday's game will move on to face #1 Stevens .
