Softball Splits Series with Mustangs

Reading, Pa. (April 2, 2022) - Alvernia University (7-9, 2-4) split its MAC Commonwealth series with the Stevenson University Mustangs (11-6, 3-3) on Saturday afternoon in softball action at Alvernia.

Leading most of game one, the Mustangs were able to mount a comeback with a four-run sixth inning to take a 6-3 win over Alvernia. The Golden Wolves then broke a 2-2 tie on an Allison Kirschner double in the bottom of the sixth for the 3-2 Alvernia win in game two.

In game one, Alvernia got on the board first with Julie Burkhardt driving in Sarah Reinert in the bottom of the first.

Alvernia held to the 1-0 lead until the fifth inning when the Mustangs evened it up at 1-1 on a double to the left gap.

The Golden Wolves retook the lead in its half of the fifth with Hope Robinson driving in Sara Campbell.

The Mustangs then jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the top of the sixth after putting up four runs on three hits.

Alvernia got one back in the bottom half of the inning with Kerstin Koenig driving in Tara Tumasz to make it a two-run game, 5-3.

The Mustangs added an insurance run on a double to the left game to go up 6-3,  and Alvernia was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh for the 6-3 final.

Reinert led Alvernia with two hits in game one.

In game two of the afternoon, Kirshner put Alvernia on the board first after driving in Koenig on a sac fly in the bottom of the second. In the same inning, Brooke Weister singled through the left side to send Devan Hudson across the plate for the 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs evened it up at 2-2 in the top of the fourth with a two-run double to left field.

It would take two innings for Alvernia to retake the lead with Kirschner scoring Campbell from first base with a hard hit double to the left gap to put Alvernia up 3-2.

The Mustangs had the game-tying run in scoring position with no outs in the top of the seventh, but Emma Kropkowski was able to pitch Alvernia out of the threat, retiring the final three batters for the 3-2 Alvernia win.

Alvernia is back in action on Thursday at Rutgers-Camden.
