Alvernia Outlasts Widener, 14-12

Chester, Pa. (April 29, 2022) - Alvernia University (16-21-5, 9-5) scored four runs in three separate innings to take a 14-12 win over Widener University (19-17, 8-6) in MAC Commonwealth baseball action on Friday at Widener.

The Golden Wolves secured the series sweep over Widener and are now in a three-way tie for second in MAC Commonwealth standings with just a doubleheader against Messiah to go. Alvernia is tied with York and Stevenson at 9-5. York takes on winless Albright to close out its regular season tomorrow, and Stevenson goes to top-ranked Lebanon Valley. Both Messiah and Widener are in t-5th at 8-6. Widener takes on eighth-ranked Hood for tomorrow's doubleheader while Alvernia travels to Messiah.

Alvernia jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first with Brandon Smith doubling to right field to bring in Zach Rogacki and Nick Nutile for Alvernia's first runs of the game. A shallow infield fly was dropped by the Widener pitcher for what would have been out number three, and Alvernia took advantage. Matt Edwards was able to safely reach first and Smith came home for the 3-0 lead. Lucas Floyd then doubled to center to keep the inning rolling and bring in Edwards for Alvernia's 4-0 lead.

The Pride got two back in the bottom of the first and evened it up in the bottom of the second for a 4-4 tie going into the top of the third.

The Golden Wolves put up another four spot in the top of the third. Alvernia loaded the bases with no outs before a single by Lucas Floyd to right center brought in Nick Nutile. Later in the inning with the bases still loaded, Luca Grammatica hit a double to left field to drive in three runs and give Alvernia the 8-4 advantage.

After Widener got two back in its half of the third, Alvernia kept things going in its half of the fourth with another four spot. After Justin Ayala led off with a single to right, Nick Nutile blasted a triple to the right gap to score Ayala. Nutile then scored on a Smith single. Another Pride error on an Edwards' at-bat brought in Thomas Faggioni and Smith for the 12-6 lead.

Widener got two back in the bottom of the fourth to get within four, 12-8, but Alvernia tacked on one in the top of the sixth to put Alvernia up by five, 13-8, as Floyd drove in Edwards with a double.

The Pride again answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to stay within four.

After a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, Alvernia made it a five-run game again as Edwards hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Nutile for Alvernia's 14-9 lead.

The Pride then threatened in the bottom of the ninth as they faced their final three outs. The Pride had runners on second and third with no outs and Widener scored its first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Widener then got within three, 14-11, on an infield sacrifice hit. A solo shot by Fremgen brought Alvernia within three, 14-12.  Alvernia was able to secure the final out of the game on a strikeout two at-bats later to secure the 14-12 win.

Jake Reese got the start and struck out four before Shayne Ostrowsky pitched four fantastic innings of relief - allowing just three hits and no earned runs.

Smith and Floyd each finished with four hits and both finished with three RBIs.

Alvernia returns to action tomorrow with a crucial series at Messiah to close out the regular season.
