Reading, Pa. (April 30, 2022) - While Alvernia University (15-17, 7-9) was eliminated from a postseason appearance with a MAC Commonwealth split against Messiah University (25-13, 11-5) at home today, the Alvernia season came to a close in nothing but iconic fashion on senior day.
After dropping game one 3-2, Alvernia walked off game two with 3-2 final going in favor of the Golden Wolves.
With the game locked up at 2-2 following one of the best outings of Emma Kropkowski's season in the circle, Alvernia graduate student Sarah Reinert stepped up to the plate to lead off the bottom of the seventh for her final at-bat of her collegiate career. Reinert, who became Alvernia's all-time hit leader less than a week ago, stepped up to the moment and ripped the ball down the right field line. The ball rolled past Alvernia's tarp on the right field line as Reinert rounded the bases. Alvernia Head Coach Wes Landrum waved Reinert home as she was able to snag a corner of home plate for the inside the park home run and give Alvernia the 3-2 walk off win.
Of Reinert's 208 career hits, it was just her second career home run.
After Messiah led 2-0 after the top of the first, Alvernia drew the game even with Hope Robinson and Devan Hudson bringing in runs in the bottom of the second.
The game turned into a defensive duel from there until Reinert walked it off.
Kropkowski finished with two strikeouts and Reinert led Alvernia with two hits.
In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia nearly completed a comeback, but Messiah was able to hold on for the 3-2 win.
The split series marks the end of Alvernia's 2022 campaign.
