York, Pa. (May 8, 2022) - #3 Alvernia University's baseball season came to a close on Sunday as the Golden Wolves were eliminated by #2 York College in the MAC Commonwealth Championship semifinal at York.

Alvernia took the first game of the doubleheader, 4-1, to even the best of three series at 1-1 and force the if necessary game. York came into game two hot and led wire to wire to eliminate Alvernia with a 7-3 win over the Golden Wolves.

In game one of the afternoon, both teams went scoreless in the opening two innings until Alvernia put up a two spot in the top of the third with Zach Rogacki and Justin Ayala bringing in runs. 

York got one back in the bottom of the third on a solo homer to left, but Alvernia's Matt Edwards matched York's homer with one of his own in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-1 game.

Ayala tacked one on to Alvernia's lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single down the right field line to push Alvernia's lead to 4-1.

While Alvernia was held hitless the rest of the way, the Golden Wolves were able to keep the Spartans off the board to take the 4-1 win.

Jack Cossa picked up the win for Alvernia on the mound, pitching seven innings and striking out four. Christian Burrus got the save with two innings of relief work.

Ayala led Alvernia's offense with two hits and two RBIs. 

In the final game of the series, York jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the bottom of the first as the Spartans scored two runs on wild pitches and added another on a solo homer.

York added one in the bottom of the second on a bases loaded walk to take a 4-0 lead.

Alvernia got one on the board in the top of the third with Ayala hitting a sacrifice fly to bring in Jason Lind. The Golden Wolves then made it a two run game, 4-2, in the top of the fifth Zach Rogacki driving in Mike Ramundo on a sacrifice fly. 

The Golden Wolves then scored for their third inning in a row with Ramundo driving in Edwards on a sac fly to make it a 4-3 game heading into the bottom of the sixth. 

York's defense locked Alvernia down in the final three innings while its offense added to its lead. The Spartans added one run in the bottom seventh and two in the bottom of the eighth to take a 7-3 lead into the ninth.

York then retired the side in the top of the ninth as the Spartans punched their ticket to the MAC Commonwealth Championship series. 
Alvernia finishes its 2022 campaign at 18-24-1 overall and 10-6 in MAC Commonwealth play.
