Alvernia Downs Blazers, 83-56

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 14, 2023) - Alvernia University (11-6, 6-2) used a 31-point third quarter to push past Hood College (4-11, 1-6) in an 83-56 win over the Blazers on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves led by just six at the half, but Alvernia started the second half on a 10-3 run as the Golden Wolves began to leave the Blazers in the dust.

Alvernia jumped out to an early 5-0 run following a layup by Jordan Karmonick and a 3-pointer from Tamia Wessels. After the Blazers got on the board with a field goal, Kayla Williams and Wessels knocked down back-to-back field goals to extend Alvernia's lead to seven, 9-2, with 6:47 to play in the first quarter.

The Golden Wolves extended their lead to as much as nine in the first quarter following a Madison Miskar layup and and-one free throw. Scoring then slowed on both sides as the Golden Wolves and Blazers combined for three points in the final three minutes of the half as Alvernia took a 21-13 lead into the second frame.

The Blazers opened the second quarter with back-to-back field goals to get within four, by a 3-pointer from Karmonick got Alvernia back on track and back in front by seven, 24-17, with seven minutes to play in the half.

Alvernia struggled to put distance between itself and the Blazers as Hood got back within four for a second time during the quarter, 29-25, with two minutes to play in the half. The Golden Wolves scored four of the final six points of the half to take a 33-27 lead into the break.

The Golden Wolves came out of the break firing, and a layup from Wessels followed by back-to-back threes from Karmonick jumped Alvernia's lead up to 14, 41-27.

The Blazers would not quite go away as a 3-pointer from Hood's Nyla Laniyonu brought the Blazers within five at the midpoint of the third quarter. But, a quick 8-0 run by Alvernia over the next minute that included four points by Williams extended Alvernia's lead back to double-digits, 54-43.

After a 3-pointer by Hood with 2:37 to play in the quarter, the Golden Wolves held the Blazers scoreless the rest of the frame while adding eight points of their own to make it a 64-46 game going into the final ten minutes.

A 3-pointer by Jordyn Ingelido marked the first points of the fourth quarter and extended Alvernia's lead to 21, 67-46. The Golden Wolves continued to keep their foot on the gas as the Blazer's scoring slowed. A 3-pointer by Karmonick gave Alvernia a 25 point lead with 4:16 to play, and Alvernia made it a 31-point game three minutes later following a layup by Kylie Bradford. The Blazers scored the final four for the 83-56 final.

Karmonick led Alvernia with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. Cathryn Kramer led Alvernia's rebounding efforts with 13 boards. She also added two blocks.

The Golden Wolves have a midweek bye and will return to action at home on Saturday, January 21 against Stevenson.
