Alvernia Takes Third at Virginia Duals

Hampton, Va. (Jan. 14, 2023) - After winning the Poquoson River bracket on Friday, Alvernia went 1-1 in the championship bracket on Saturday to secure a 3rd place finish at the Virginia Duals.

The Golden Wolves lost a close 22-16 match to Kutztown University in the semifinal, and then defeated Elizabethtown College 30-12 in the third place match.

In the match against Kutztown, Alvernia and the Golden Bears traded decisions through the first four weight classes. Alvernia then won back-to-back bouts with Robert Lawlor and Matthew Lackman securing 6-0 and 5-0 decisions, respectively, to give Alvernia the 12-6 edge. But, the Golden Bears took back-to-back technical falls over Alvernia to pick up ten points and take the 16-12 lead. Mauro Pellot-Vazquez then took a 15-2 major decision at 197 to pick up four points and even the match up at 16-16. The match came down to the heavyweight bout and Kutztown's Dustin Swanson was able to pin Alvernia's Zachary Scheffler for the six points and a victory for Kutztown.

With the loss to the Golden Bears, Alvernia moved to the third place match to take on Elizabethtown College.

Alvernia and the Blue Jays were tied at 3-3 after the first two bouts. Avery Leonard then recorded a technical fall, Chance Babb picked up a 5-2 decision, and Jazon Rezac secured a pin in 1:28 to pick up 14 quick points for Alvernia and give the Golden Wolves a 17-3 lead. The Golden Wolves dropped three points at 165 lbs, but picked up four as Lackman had an 8-0 decision at 174 lbs. Alvernia added another three on a narrow 2-1 decision for Isaac Kassis at 184 lbs. Alvernia and Elizabethtown traded forfeits in the final two weight classes as Alvernia came away with the 30-12 win for 3rd place.

Glenville State won the tournament with a 32-16 win over Kutztown.

Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday night with a dual against King's at home.
