Glenside, Pa (January 18, 2023) -Alvernia University (12-5,6-2) fell to Arcadia University (7-9, 3-5) 74-69, in non-conference men's basketball action Wednesday night at Arcadia.
The Golden Wolves got on the board first when Robert Mullan knocked down a three pointer but Arcadia's Justin Money knocked down a three of his own to tie it at three.
A layup by Malik Green and two by Keba Mitchell gave Alvernia a 9-3 lead before Jalen Watkins and Money made layups to close the gap to 9-7.
Money would make another layup to tie the ballgame at nine with just under five minutes gone in the first half.
Both teams traded buckets back and forth before Green made two free throws and Jakob Kelly made a layup as Alvernia took the 17-13 lead.
The Golden Wolves ripped off a 16-3 scoring run with Cooke making three layups and Jalil Schneck knocked down both a three and a layup as Alvernia extended its lead to 32-16, with eight minutes left in the half.
Arcadia's Watkins made a layup directly after an Arcadia timeout, then Nas Johnson hit a three and Tre DiGuglielmo made a jumper to cut the Alvernia lead to 34-23.
Alvernia's Kelly denied Kameron Parks at the rim before Kelly knocked down two free throws to make it 36-23 Golden Wolves.
Alvernia ripped off another scoring run, extending its lead to 45-29 with 1:29 left to go in the first half. Kyle Gordon made two layups, Cooke made a two point jumper and both Mullan and Green made free throws.
DiGuglielmo and Money made layups for the Knights and Cooke sunk a three pointer as the Golden Wolves went into the half with a 48-33 lead.
Arcadia's Joshua Okocha made a three to start the half and Money hit a two point jumper to cut the Alvernia lead to ten.
Mullan made two foul shots and a layup before Watkins made two free throws and Johnson made a layup to bring the Knights within single digits, 51-42 with 17:22 on the clock.
Green, Mullan and Malik Slay all made layups but Arcadia countered with Okocha and Money threes to cut the lead to 57-52 with 12:39 left in the game.
Schneck made two free throws and Green made a layup off of a steal to make it 61-52 in favor of the Golden Wolves.
Josh Parks made a three for Arcadia before Slay knocked down a jumper as Alvernia maintained an eight point advantage.
The Knights ripped off a 9-3 run with threes from Okocha and Darius Issac. Green made a three, which were Alvernia's only points during the run as the Golden Wolves held a slim 66-64 lead.
A Kelly layup halted the Arcadia run but was countered by an Okocha layup to keep the game within two points, 68-66 Alvernia with 4:20 left on the clock.
Kelly made a free throw to put the Golden Wolves up 69-66, but Arcadia's Watkins hit a two point jumper to make it a one point game, 69-68.
Watkins then made two free throws with just under two minutes to go to give Arcadia a 70-69 lead.
Both Alvernia and Arcadia missed its opportunities on the next two possessions before Dom Vasquez was fouled and knocked two free throws down to make it 72-69 Arcadia with three seconds left.
The Golden Wolves tuned the ball over and Okocha made two more free throws as Arcadia secured the 74-69 victory over Alvernia
Alvernia was led by Green with 20 points and eight rebounds and four steals, Cooke added 13 and four steals. Mullan tallied nine points, Kelly added eight and two blocks.
The Golden Wolves are back in action when they host Stevenson on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
