Alvernia Rolls Past York, 73-61

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 28, 2023) - After a closely contested first quarter, Alvernia University (13-7, 8-3) ran away with a 73-61 win over York College (7-13, 4-7) on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Alvernia.

The win marks Alvernia's 13th of the season, and eighth win in MAC Commonwealth play. 13 wins marks Alvernia's most in a season since the 2010-11 season.

Alvernia led by just one point after the first quarter, but the Golden Wolves held York to just six points in the second frame as Alvernia started to distance itself from the Spartans. The Golden Wolves put up 25 in the third quarter and coasted to the finish in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans got out to a 3-0 lead with a layup and and-one free throw on their second possession. Alvernia evened it up with a Jordan Karmonick three following a steal by Kayla Williams. The Golden Wolves took a 5-3 lead on a Cathryn Kramer layup - also off the steal of Williams - and made it a 6-3 game on a free throw by Tamia Wessels.

The Spartans came back and evened it up at 6-6 with a three of their own, but Karmonick answered with her second three in two minutes to give Alvernia a 9-6 lead.

A 3-pointer by Malone and layup from Kramer gave Alvernia some distance, 14-8, with 4:18 to play in the quarter. The Spartans held Alvernia to just four points the rest of the quarter, and got back within one, 18-17, going into the second quarter.

The Golden Wolves opened the second quarter scoring with a pull-up jumper by Wessels. Alvernia kept the Spartans off the board for five and a half minutes while Alvernia added four more points to its lead to go up on the Spartans 24-19 with 4:30 to play in the half.

Following the layup from the Spartans that put them on the board in the second quarter with 4:30 to play, Alvernia closed out the quarter on a 10-4 run to give Alvernia the 34-23 advantage going into the half. Five different players scored for Alvernia during the 10-4 run.

Williams opened the third quarter for Alvernia with back-to-back field goals to give Alvernia a 13 point advantage, 38-25. Wessels and Williams then knocked down back-to-back threes to push Alvernia's lead to 19, 44-25, with 6:48 to play in the third quarter.

After the Golden Wolves and Spartans traded points over the next three minutes, a 3-pointer by Jordyn Ingelido pushed Alvernia's lead to 20 points, 55-35, with 3:17 to play in the third frame.

The Spartans got a few back on Alvernia in the final minutes of the third quarter as Alvernia's lead dropped slightly, 59-42, going into the final frame.

A put-back layup from Williams opened the final quarter for Alvernia and gave Alvernia the 19 point lead. The Spartans got back within 15, with 6:10 to play, but a quick 7-0 run by Alvernia through the midpoint of the fourth quarter put the game out of reach for the Spartans as Alvernia took a 22 point lead with 4:19 to play.

Alvernia was held to just two points the rest of the way, but Alvernia's lead was too much to overcome for the Spartans as Alvernia came away with the 73-61 win.

Malone led Alvernia with a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double. Kramer finished with eight points and ten rebounds, and Karmonick finished with a team-high 15 rebounds and five assists.

Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday at Eastern.
