Golden Wolves and Valiants Play to 2-2 Tie

Manhattanville takes shootout, 1-0

Reading, Pa (January 6, 2023) - Alvernia University (5-5-3, 4-3-1) played to a 2-2 draw with Manhattanville College (7-6-1, 7-2-1) Friday night in UCHC women's ice hockey action at Body Zone. 

The Valiants took the shootout 1-0 with Morgan Miller converting the only shot. 

Manhattanville pressured early, firing seven shots in the first ten minutes of the game but Alvernia's Julia Beaven saved three and Abby Reisninger blocked two. 

The Valiants got on the board first when Grace Felicio scored an unassisted goal to give Manhattanville the 1-0 lead with six minutes left in the first period. 

The Golden Wolves leveled the score just under two minutes later when Olivia Gilida and Julia Franklin assisted Sydney Bradley, who buried her shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. 

The Valiants would fire three more shots in the final five minutes of the first period but Beaven denied all three to send the game into the first intermission tied at one. 

Alvernia and Manhattanville traded shots back and forth, with Alvernia rattling off seven shots and Manhattanville tallying ten. The Valiants then scored in the tenth minute of the second period when Gabrielle Cox netted an unassisted, delayed penalty goal to give the Valiants a 2-1 lead. 

The Golden Wolves leveled the score just three minutes later when Carolyn Burton found Franklin who passed the puck to an open Olivia Gilida, Gilida fired her shot into the back of the net to tie the game at two. 

The Valiants controlled the pressure in the final seven minutes, firing seven shots but the Alvernia defense held strong to send the game into the final intermission locked at 2-2. 

A scoreless third period was highlighted by Manhattanville outshooting the Golden Wolves 13-5. Amber Steinhilpert, Shae Hudec and Kathryn Palmer all had shots in the third for Alvernia as the game headed to overtime. 

The Golden Wolves fired eight shots to Manhattanville's five, but both goalies held strong as the game went to a shootout. 

The Valiants would shoot first, Miller skated up and converted the first attempt to give Manhattanville a 1-0 advantage. 

Reisinger stepped up for the Golden Wolves and had her shot saved by Manhattanville's Franny Gerardi. Cox then stepped up for the Valiants and had her shot denied by Alvernia's Beaven. 

Steinhilpert took the next penalty shot for the Golden Wolves but it was saved by Gerardi as the Valiants preserved the 1-0 advantage. 

Manhattanville sent Catrina Chinetti to take the final shot which was saved by Beaven, giving Alvernia life. Franklin skated up for Alvernia and could not find the right side of the goal as Manhattanville took the shootout 1-0. 

Beaven tallied 30 saves in net for the Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia was led by Gilida and Bradley with the goals, Franklin tallied two assists and Gilida and Burton both added one. Bradley and Franklin led with five shots on goal each. 

Alvernia is back in action next Friday when they host Stevenson University for a weekend series. Game time is 3:00 PM on Friday.
