Annville, Pa (January 7, 2023) - A 30 point third quarter helped Lebanon Valley College (6-7, 3-2) take down Alvernia University (10-5, 5-1) 74-64 in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Lebanon Valley.
The loss marked the first conference loss of the season for the Golden Wolves as they fell to 5-1 in MAC Commonwealth play.
The Golden Wolves got started early with Jordan Karmonick opening the scoring up with a three just under two minutes into the first quarter.
Alvernia's Cathryn Kramer added two layups, and Tamia Wessles made a two point jumper to give the Golden Wolves a 9-0 advantage with six minutes left in the first quarter.
Karmonick buried another three pointer and tallied a free throw as Alvernia capped off a 14-0 run to start the game with Karmonick tallying seven of the 14 points.
The Dutchmen battled back as Riley Hevelow made three straight buckets to cut the deficit to 14-6 before Kailey Eckhart knocked down a two point jumper. Hevelow made another two point jumper before Samya Santiague and Christina Fernandez both tallied buckets for LVC as they tied the game at 14 heading into the second quarter.
The Golden Wolves broke the tie in the first 15 seconds of the second quarter when Kramer converted an and- one opportunity to give Alvernia a three point lead.
Lebanon Valley's Eckhart scored a two point jumper to cut the deficit to one before Kayla Williams knocked down a three point jumper thanks to an assist from Wessles to make it a 20-16 game. Wessles would hit two free throws with seven minutes left in the quarter to extend Alvernia's lead to 22-16.
LVC's Daelyn Stabler made a basket in the paint and Fernandez made a layup and knocked down a free throw to bring the Dutchmen within one with under five minutes to go in the half, 22-21.
The Golden Wolves rattled off three straight two point jumpers by Karmonick, Wessles, and Taliyah Malone to extend the lead to seven before LVC's Kate Fitzpatrick made a jumper to make it a 28-23 game.
Alvernia would extend it's advantage to 11 with under a minute remaining in the half. Both Malone and Williams made layups for Alvernia with Karmonick assisting both of them, before Williams knocked down a two pointer to make it a 34-23 game..
Stabler made a jumper in the paint and Fitzpatrick knocked down two free throws in the final seconds of the second quarter to send the game to halftime with Alvernia holding onto a seven point lead.
Lebanon Valley opened up the scoring in the second half when Hevelow made a two pointer and Fitzpatrick drained a three to cut the lead to two. Williams would make a free throw to give Alvernia a 35-32 lead before Stabler made a bucket in the paint and Hevelow made two free throws to give the Dutchmen their first lead of the contest.
A layup by Wessles gave the Golden Wolves a brief lead before Fitzpatrick knocked down two more from the charity stripe and swung the lead back in favor of the Dutchmen. Two more free throws by Stabler and a three pointer by Santiague extended the Dutchmen lead to 43-37 with five minutes left in the third.
Alvernia cut the lead to two after a LVC free throw when Williams made a bucket in the paint and Malone knocked down a three pointer to make it a 44-42 ballgame in favor of LVC.
The Golden Wolves tied the game at 44 when Wessles scored a layup on a fastbreak to level the score with just over three minutes left in the quarter.
Lebanon Valley rattled off a 13-1 scoring run to end the third quarter with Fitzpatrick tallying 11 of those 13 points to cap off a 30 point quarter for LVC. Kramer knocked down the lone free throw for Alvernia during the run as the Dutchmen took a 12 point, 57-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
Alvernia cut the lead to eight in the first three minutes of the fourth with Williams scoring four straight points. LVC's Stabler responded with a two point bucket and a free throw to extend the lead to 11.
The Golden Wolves went on a 6-2 scoring run in the next two minutes with Williams scoring four points and Kramer added a layup as Alvernia cut the lead to seven. LVC's Hevelow knocked down a jumper and Fitzpatrick made a three and a layup after two free throws from Wessels to pump the Dutchmen lead back up to double digits.
Williams knocked down a three to cut the deficit to nine with 1:32 left in the game but was answered by a Fernandez layup, LVC leads 71-60. Both teams would trade free throws back and forth as Lebanon Valley handed Alvernia its first loss in the MAC Commonwealth conference.
Williams led the Golden Wolves with 23 points and eight rebounds. Wessles finished with 12 points and both Karmonick and Kramer tallied 11 points.
Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Messiah to take on the Falcons. Tip-off is set for 8:00 PM.
