Golden Wolves Fall in Five Sets to Lions, 3-2

Reading, Pa (October 26, 2023) - Alvernia University (10-8) dropped a five set match to Penn State Berks (6-14) 3-2, in a non-conference women's volleyball matchup Thursday evening at Penn State Berks. 

Alvernia jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first set but the Lions bounced back with three straight points to cut the lead to four, 10-6. 

Berks then ripped off a 12-6 scoring run to take the two point, 18-16 lead. 

Alvernia bounced back with five of the next six points to take a two point, 21-19 lead. 

The Golden Wolves then tallied four of the next seven points to take the first set by a score of 25-22. Rachel Siping tallied five kills in the first set for the Golden Wolves and Cierra Roberts, Kayleigh Kehler, Patricia Falar and Emma Remaley all recorded kills for Alvernia during the set. 

Penn State Berks responded by jumping out to a 7-2 lead to start the second set but the Golden Wolves responded with a 9-2 run of their own to take the two point, 11-9 lead.  

Both teams traded points back and forth with Alvernia maintaining the two point, 16-14 lead but the Lions then tallied three straight to take the 17-16 lead. 

Alvernia bounced back by tallying five of the next six points to take the 21-18 lead. 

The Lions then ended the second set by scoring seven of the final eight points to take the second set 25-22 and even the match at one. 

The Golden Wolves jumped out to yet another early lead in the third set, this one a 9-4 advantage over the Lions thanks to kills from Olivia Rohrbaugh, Roberts, Remaley and three from Sipling. 

The Lions then tallied five of the next eight points but the Golden Wolves held a three point, 12-9 lead. 

Alvernia then went on a 7-3 scoring run to extend the lead to seven, 19-12 after kills from Lindsay Ferguson, Sipling and Remaley and an ace from Jordan Thompson

Berks then tallied a 9-4 scoring run that saw the Lions cut the Golden Wolves lead to just two, 23-21 late in the third set. 

Alvernia then recorded two of the final three points of the set to take the third set 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ferguson tallied a solo block to clinch the third set. 

Berks started the fourth set on a six to three run but the Golden Wolves came back and tallied four of the next five points to tie the set at seven. 

The teams then traded points back and forth as the set remained tied at 12 but the Lions then went on a 6-1 scoring run to take a five point, 18-13 lead. 

Alvernia responded with four straight points to take the 19-18 lead and force a Berks timeout but the Lions came out of the timeout and scored seven of the final nine points of the set to take the fourth set 25-19 and send the match to the tiebreaking set. 

The Lions came out in the fifth set and tallied the first nine points to take a controlling 9-0 lead. 

Alvernia then bounced back with an 11-3 scoring run of its own to cut the deficit to one, 12-11 but the Lions tallied the final three points of the deciding set to take the set 15-11 and secure the 3-2 victory. 

Sipling led the Golden Wolves with 24 kills and 11 digs, Jamie Pierce tallied seven total blocks, Ferguson recorded six and Jordan Thompson led with 24 digs. Hailey McDevitt led Alvernia with 26 assists and Falar added 14 for the Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a trimatch with Harrisburg and Penn State Abington.
