Alvernia Holds Off Rutgers-Camden, 3-2

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2023) - Alvernia University (8-5) used a 15-4 fifth set to take a 3-2 win over Rutgers-Camden (10-8) on Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's volleyball action at Alvernia.

After an early back and forth in set one, Alvernia got a run going off the serve of Rachel Sipling. The Golden Wolves recorded five straight points off the serve of Sipling to take an 8-4 lead. Sipling recorded two kills and an ace on the run, and Julianna McGlone and Jamie Pierce each recorded a kill.

As the set remained close, with Alvernia leading by one, the Golden Wolves sparked another run off the serve of Jordan Thompson. Alvernia recorded five of the next six points to take a 16-11 lead and force a Rutgers-Camden timeout. Sipling and Remaley each recorded kills, and the Raptors also committed an attack error.

The Raptors rebounded after the timeout and worked their way back in, forcing a 20-20 tie later in the set. The trading of points continued and forced the set past 25 points, but back to back kills from McGlone and Lindsay Ferguson closed the set out with Alvernia taking it, 28-26.

Rutgers picked things up in the second set and quickly jumped out to a 10-5 lead. Alvernia closed the gap to two, 16-14, but Alvernia would not get any closer in the second set as the Raptors cruised to a 25-17 second set win to even the match up at 1-1.

The Raptors kept it rolling in the third set, taking another 25-17 set win to lead the match, 2-1. Alvernia trailed by just two, 5-3, early in the set after a block from Pierce and Sipling as well as a kill from Sipling. The Golden Wolves then made it a one point set, 6-5, off an ace from Sipling. But, the Raptors then went on an 8-2 win to push its lead to 14-7. Alvernia never got closer than six the rest of the set as the Raptors took the 2-1 lead with the 25-17 set win.

The Golden Wolves came out firing in the fourth set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead early. Sipling recorded four kills and Patricia Falar had a service ace to jump start the early lead. But, the Raptors came back firing and went on a 10-4 run to take the lead at 13-12. The Golden Wolves held strong though and retook the lead, 16-15, on a kill from Remaley. Alvernia then pushed through to the finish with back-to-back kills from Cierra Roberts off the bench making it a 23-19 set. A bad set and an attack error by the Raptors pushed the set to set-point for the Golden Wolves, and another kill from Roberts gave Alvernia the set, 25-20.

Alvernia came out on fire in the decisive fifth set as back-to-back errors by the Raptors and a service ace by Falar gave Alvernia the quick 3-0 lead. The Golden Wolves kept it up and three more Rutgers errors along with two more Sipling kills made it an 8-2 set. Alvernia did not miss a step as the teams paused to switch sides as Sipling served Alvernia to five straight points to make it a 13-2 set. Sipling had two aces in the run and Roberts recorded a kill. A kill from McGlone took the set to match point, and a kill from Roberts hammered the match home as Alvernia took the fifth set, 15-4, and the match, 3-2.

Sipling finished with 23 kills on 54 attacks to lead the Golden Wolves. Roberts finished with six kills late, and Remaley finished with ten. Falar finished with 31 assists and Hailey McDevitt finished with 19 assists. McDevitt also led Alvernia with 18 digs. Sipling finished with four blocks, three solo, and Ferguson finished with three blocks. Sipling also led Alvernia with five service aces.
