Reading, Pa. (Nov. 18, 2023) - Neumann University (4-4-1, 0-3-1) scored on a last-minute goal to force overtime against Alvernia University (6-1-1, 4-1-1) and took the shootout, 2-0, over the Golden Wolves in UCHC and MAC Women's Ice Hockey action at Body Zone.
Alvernia overcame a 2-1 deficit in the third period to take a 3-2 lead over the Knights. But, Neumann wasn't going down without a fight as the Knights scored the equalizer with 1:12 to play. Both teams couldn't connect in the 3v3 overtime as the game went down as a tie and moved into a shootout for the additional point. The Knights then took the shootout, 2-0.
The Knights took the early 1-0 lead after a goal after Neumann's Alyssa Papasodero scored on a put back attempt. Alvernia equalized it at 1-1 with just over four minutes to play as Julia Franklin connected with Khenzie Connick as the Golden Wolves broke through after peppering the Knights with shots.Â
The game remained locked at 1-1 through the second period. Alvernia outshot the Knights 15-7 on goal in the frame, but the Knights kept Alvernia from taking the lead. Alvernia killed off two minutes of a five minute major as the period came to a close and moved into the third.
The Knights then scored in the opening minutes of the third to take a 2-1 lead as they remained on the power play to open the period. But, less than six minutes later, Alvernia took advantage of its own power play opportunity as Connick found the back of the net for the second time on the afternoon, this time off the assist of Sofia King.
Alverina then took the 3-2 lead on another power play goal as Sikke Ask fired on net off the assist of Lexi Hooper and Connick.
Alvernia nearly took the 3-2 lead to the finish line, but the Knights had other plans. As Neumann was making the move to go empty net, the Neumann attack broke through off a goal by Georgia Wunder to even it up at 3-3.
Alvernia had one more look before time expired, but the attempt went wide as the game moved into overtime.
Alvernia had seven shot attempts in overtime to Neumann's two, but neither could break through as the game ended in a tie and moved into a shootout.
The Knights had the first look in the shootout, but the attempt went high and wide. Alvernia then sent Connick up to take its first attempt, but she missed her attempt as the shootout remained at 0-0. The Knights then converted their second attempt to take a 1-0 lead on the shootout. Sydney Bradley then stepped up to try to even it up at 1-1, but her attempt was saved. Neumann then made its third attempt to take the shootout, 2-0.
Alvernia outshot the Knights, 50-21, on goal. And, following Friday's game that saw both team's combine to go 0-for-13 on the power play, both teams each scored at least one power play goal today.
Julia Beaven finished with 18 saves in net. Connick led Alvernia with two goals and an assist. Julia Franklin finished with 12 faceoff wins and Amber Steinhilpert went 10-for-12 on the faceoff.Â
Alvernia has off next weekend for Thanksgiving and will return to action on December 1st at Stevenson.Â
