Big First Quarter Powers Golden Wolves Past Scarlet Raptors, 69-34

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 27, 2023) - Alvernia University (5-1) jumped out to a 27-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as the Golden Wolves defeated Rutgers-Camden (0-6) 69-34 in non-conference women's basketball action at Alvernia.

Alvernia held the Scarlet Raptors to just six points in both the first and fourth quarters and 11 points in both the second and third quarters. The 34 points that Alvernia held Rutgers-Camden to is the lowest point total scored by an opponent since November 28th, 2022 when Alvernia held the Scarlet Raptors to just 33 points.

A Tamia Wessels 3-pointer on Alvernia's first possession set the tone for the night for the Golden Wolves. Alvernia built its lead up to 8-0 after two and a half minutes of action following a layup from Kayla Williams and a Taliyah Malone 3-pointer.

The Scarlet Raptors got on the board at the 7:17 mark and cut it to a four point game, 8-4, with 6:46 to play. But, a Meghan Ruth jumper at 5:47 would spark a 19-2 run to close out the first quarter for Alvernia as the Golden Wolves took a 27-6 lead into the second frame. Five Golden Wolves scored during the run, with Wessels accounting for seven of the 19 points scored.

Wessels kept things rolling with back-to-back 3-pointers to open the second quarter to make it a 33-9 game. Malone then joined in with a 3-pointer and layup of her own as Alvernia extended its lead to 38-9 with 7:39 to play in the half.

The Scarlet Raptors held Alvernia scoreless over the next four and a half minutes, but they couldn't make much of a dent on the Alvernia lead, scoring just six points of their own during Alvernia's scoring drought.

A jumper by Ruth ended the scoring drought for the Golden Wolves with 3:17 to play in the half and another layup from Ruth marked Alvernia's final points of the half as Alvernia took a 42-17 lead into the break.

Both teams struggled to find a rhythm in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but a Wessels layup got Alvernia back on track with 7:08 to play in the quarter. The Scarlet Raptors then made a series of free throws to get within 20, 44-24, with 6:12 to play in the quarter until a 3-pointer by Jordan Karmonick pushed Alvernia's lead back up to 23, 47-24. Karmonick's 3-pointer ignited an 11-2 run for Alvernia over the next four minutes. Malone added a 3-pointer during the run and Madison Miskar scored five for the Golden Wolves. The Scarlet Raptors scored the final two points of the quarter off of free throws as Alvernia took the 55-28 lead into the final quarter.

Alvernia kept it rolling in the fourth quarter, and an Aaliyah Ferrer 3-pointer from the top of the arch made it a 30 point game, 60-30, with 6:37 to play. Alvernia then closed out the final four minutes on an 8-2 run for the 69-34 final. Morgan Janeski scored six of the eight for Alvernia, and a Jadah Mangum jumper marked Alvernia's final points of the game and gave Alvernia its largest lead of the night.

Wessels led Alvernia with 20 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the field with four 3-pointers. She also had five rebounds and three steals on the night. Kayla Williams led Alvernai with 10 boards. Karmonick finished with a team-high five assists and four steals. Janeski led Alvernia with six points and six boards off the bench, and Miskar and Kyle Bradford each had seven boards off the bench.

Alvernia is off until December 12th when the Golden Wolves host Immaculata.
