Alvernia Downs Gwynedd Mercy, 3-0 in Regular Season Finale

Gwynedd Valley, Pa (November 3, 2023) - Alvernia University (13-9) took down Gwynedd Mercy University (10-14) 3-0, in straight sets Friday night in a non-conference women's volleyball match at Gwynedd. 

The three set sweep marks the 11th sweep of the season for Alvernia and its 13 wins is the most since the 2017 season where the Golden Wolves tallied 16 wins. 

Both teams traded points back and forth early in the first set before the Golden Wolves tallied four of five to take a 7-4 lead. Julianna McClone, Rachel Sipling and Lindsay Ferguson all tallied kills for Alvernia. 

The Griffins tallied three of the next five but then the Golden Wolves ripped off an 11-2 scoring run to take a commanding 11 point, 20-9 lead. Sipling tallied two kills, McGlone, Kayleigh Kehler and Emma Remaley all recorded kills as well. 

Gwynedd Mercy responded with a scoring run of its own, a 10-2 run as they pulled within three, 22-19 but the Golden Wolves halted the run thanks to two McGlone kills and a kill from Hailey McDevitt to take set one 25-20. 

The Griffins jumped out to an early 9-4 lead to start the second set before the Golden Wolves responded with seven straight points to grab the 11-9 lead. Jamie Pierce hammered home two kills, Sipling tallied one and added an ace and Olivia Rohrbaugh added a kill for Alvernia. 

Gwynedd Mercy tallied a kill to halt the Alvernia run but the Golden Wolves got right back to work, this time ripping off six of the next eight points of the set to extend the lead to five, 17-12.


The Griffins bounced back with a 9-3 scoring run to regain the lead, 21-20 late in the second set but the Golden Wolves tallied four of the final five of the final seven points of the second set to secure the 25-23 set two victory and took a 2-0 lead in the match. 

Alvernia started the final set out by taking a slim, 4-3 lead early before both teams traded points back and forth with the Griffins taking a one point, 9-8 lead. 

The Golden Wolves responded by ripping off a 9-2 scoring run to take a seven point, 18-11 lead. Abigail McGinley and Patricia Falar both recorded aces, Sipling and Pierce tallied kills and Remaley hammered home two kills during the run for the Golden Wolves. 

The Griffins tallied four of the next six points to cut the lead to five, 20-15 but the Golden Wolves tallied five of the final six points of the set to take the third set 25-16 and secure the 3-0 sweep of the Griffins. 

Sipling led the Golden Wolves with 13 kills, five digs and added two blocks. Falar led with four aces and 17 assists and McGinley tallied a team high 14 digs. 

The win marks the end of the 2023 season for the Golden Wolves.
